Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure where to post this
I was thinking what does the church teach on the creation of a soul . is a soul created before conception ( which is what I beleive ) ? or upon conception ? I was thinking of people who are not meant to be together but children are created . well if a soul is meant to be it is meant to be and it does not matter then who / what material body form the soul is born from ? I was thinking of the ps. "I knew you before you were created in your mothers womb ."
is that how it goes ? is it ps. 134 ?
would it be refering to a soul ?
Yes I'm a thinker

I don't think that the Church has an official teaching on when souls are created or even exactly when they are conferred on a human being. In terms of when a person receives a soul, we are required to *assume* it happens at conception. Even Thomas Aquinas, who lacked our scientific knowledge and questioned whether a soul was conferred on until "quickening" still stressed the importance of recognizing unborn babies at the earliest stages as human. But this is just as much because of what we don't know for certain as because of what we do.

It certainly seems to me from the scripture you quoted (though, I think it is Psalm 139) that God intentionally creates and knows a soul "in eternity" before placing that soul into "time" on earth.

Lindsay this is such a beautiful description

"that God intentionally creates and knows a soul "in eternity" before placing that soul into "time" on earth."

Thank You

From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:

Quote:
II. "BODY AND SOUL BUT TRULY ONE"

362 The human person, created in the image of God, is a being at once corporeal and spiritual. The biblical account expresses this reality in symbolic language when it affirms that "then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being."229 Man, whole and entire, is therefore willed by God.

363 In Sacred Scripture the term "soul" often refers to human life or the entire human person.230 But "soul" also refers to the innermost aspect of man, that which is of greatest value in him,231 that by which he is most especially in God's image: "soul" signifies the spiritual principle in man.

364 The human body shares in the dignity of "the image of God": it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit:232

Man, though made of body and soul, is a unity. Through his very bodily condition he sums up in himself the elements of the material world. Through him they are thus brought to their highest perfection and can raise their voice in praise freely given to the Creator. For this reason man may not despise his bodily life. Rather he is obliged to regard his body as good and to hold it in honor since God has created it and will raise it up on the last day. 233

365 The unity of soul and body is so profound that one has to consider the soul to be the "form" of the body:234 i.e., it is because of its spiritual soul that the body made of matter becomes a living, human body; spirit and matter, in man, are not two natures united, but rather their union forms a single nature.

366 The Church teaches that every spiritual soul is created immediately by God - it is not "produced" by the parents - and also that it is immortal: it does not perish when it separates from the body at death, and it will be reunited with the body at the final Resurrection.235

367 Sometimes the soul is distinguished from the spirit: St. Paul for instance prays that God may sanctify his people "wholly", with "spirit and soul and body" kept sound and blameless at the Lord's coming.236 The Church teaches that this distinction does not introduce a duality into the soul.237 "Spirit" signifies that from creation man is ordered to a supernatural end and that his soul can gratuitously be raised beyond all it deserves to communion with God.238

368 The spiritual tradition of the Church also emphasizes the heart, in the biblical sense of the depths of one's being, where the person decides for or against God.239

Love,

According to my copy of The Catholic Catechism by John A. Hardon, S.J., the belief that souls pre-existed from eternity was condemned in the sixth century since "Any kind of pre-existence of the soul would eliminate the possiblity of a true personality, because then the indwelling in a body would be a sort of imprisonment rather than a union of body and spirit to form one substance."

The Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church puts it this way

70. Where does the soul come from?
The Spiritual soul does not come from one's parents but is created immediately by God and is immortal. It does not perish at the moment when it is separated from the body in death and it will be once again reunited with the body at the moment of the final resurrection.

As for God knowing us before we were made? That's part of being all-knowing! There never was a point when He didn't know everything and everyone that ever was, is and will be, so of course He's always known me.

As for children concieved because people were together who were not supposed to be- I was taught from a very young age that this is an example of God's abounding goodness.

To quote my dad I was a gift given to a pair of wayward young people, a gift not planned for but better then anything they could have planned for themselves.

Thanks for clarifying ekbell! I'm so grateful for the magisterium of our Church for having had great minds think through all these things before us.
