Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just received an email asking about teaching children virtues.

"Do you know of a booklet or workbook or even a website that has the virtues in a "simple" way? I'm thinking of a lapbook that the kids could make that could be used as a reference when we are working on saints books or really anything."

Thanks so much. I'm sure someone here knows what can be used. God bless you!

I'm in a group that is starting a notebook to follow the Little Flowers program for Wreath one....you might want to search for Little FLowers stuff? Loads of things related to that out there.....(I noticed you have several girls)

Thanks, Marcia. Actually, she was asking about it for her 3 boys. I should have mentioned it before.

Ruth - I wanted to mention this thread - it starts out talking about habit formation, but quickly my attention turns to laying down habits as a part of virtue formation in my home. There are some links in the thread, and the last post links some books I bought (all used) that have been really nice reading material in our morning inspiration basket.

I choose a virtue to focus on (based on the list of cardinal virtues given to us by the Church) and then choose stories that relate to that virtue from the books I have listed (as well as other picture books I have in my home). Those stories are read aloud during our morning time. Then, we discuss small ways to live that virtue (formation of habits) throughout the day.

I wondered if some of this might help your enquirer.

I don't own it, but I am looking at PACE for next year for my family. Emmanuel Books sells it. Maybe someone else can give a review? Enquiring minds want to know...

I have PACE and am planning on using it next year. It looks very easy to use and perfect with a CM approach. Each section focuses on one virtue (e.g., self-discipline) and has the following sections: quotes (for memory, discussion, copywork), definition of virtue, stories from The Moral Compass and/or The Book of Virtues, related Bible stories and verses, a section on how Mary and the saints lived or struggled with the virtues, a list of books for further reading, discussion questions, writing suggestions, an enrichment section with ideas for music, art, nature/science, and classroom projects, and finally a section on practical ideas for implementing/practicing that virtue. This program looks easy, complete, and not too expensive, since the only books you really need to do it are the manual, a Bible, and either The Moral Compass or The Book of Virtues. All the stories and reading suggestions are broken down by grade level so you have some idea what is appropriate for your child(ren). You could easily do just a little (story, discussion, Bible/saint examples) or a lot (incorporating ideas from every section). Also, there is enough material to use it once at a younger age and again at an older level. You could also do a basic study for the youngers, and add on more activities for the older children.

Thanks for the review, Caroline. I can't decide if I want to buy this or make my own. Given that its not too expensive, I'm leaning towards buying it now but then using it to make my own. I'm so weird. I don't know why I can't ever leave well enough alone when it comes to manuals.

We were going to make a "garden of virtues" alongside of our Mary Garden this year. It really is a fun way to teach virtues in a hands-on way. I have this kit that lets you stamp letters into mortar and we were going to make the walking stones for the garden with the virtues stamped on them. I got tons of ideas...but so little time!
I have Pace and I have been accumulating virtues books. I am reading them to the children all of the time. I usually read them at a meal...its always best to read to them monastery-style while their mouths are full! If you are interested in my book list....just let me know!

God love you,

Forgive my ignorance, I am not Catholic. I am not sure if there are certain Catholic Virtues...or if they are even the same as character qualities like: thankfulness, diligence, etc.

If character would work, there is a "character" lapbook on HSS that has different components for each trait. There really is a LOT there, maybe something someone can use??
