Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I hate to bring up a hot topic again, but I really need some advice/opinions/different-points-of-view.

Our parish asks the adults who will be teaching religious ed to sign a CCD Teacher Certificate or Oath of Fidelity to the Church. It is basically just the precepts of the Church and your promise to live by them and uphold Church teaching, be united with Rome.

The DRE has now asked that the homeschooling families (that is the families that homeschool for religious ed because she doesn't really make a distinction with those of us that do this as a way of life) sign and turn in the same document.

I don't think its a big deal, though I'm not entirely comfortable with it. But my dh flipped out. He says that basically, unless she asks ALL parents in the parish to sign it, why should we be singled out because our children are not in a CCD class. He says our participation at Mass and reception of Holy Communion is the only "proof" of our fidelity to the Church they need to concern themselves with.

I hate confrontation, and don't want to make a big stink with the DRE or our pastor (whom I love), but my dh won't have any part of this...and I'm kind of stuck in the middle.

And moderators, if you really don't want this topic started, feel free to delete, won't hurt my feelings at all (or direct people to pm me instead)

Maria,

IMO -- I think they're singling out ALL their teachers at home or at CCD. I would feel uneasy if they were making me sign something hokey -- but if it's an oath of fidelity, I wouldn't have a problem with it -- especially in light of the fact that the parishes in NOVA are SOOOO large, I can understand why they do something like that. I don't think it's personal to homeschoolers or an affront. I think they are just trying to be spiritually responsible for the souls that are entrusted in their care without interfering too much with a parent's right to educate their child.

That's not really much advice, but just an opinion.

I'm torn.
Personally, I be irked at the request becuase it seems rather silly, but as long as the actual thing is kosher with the faith - I'd probably not throw a hissy fit over it.

I can understand insisting on volunteers/paid staff doing this, but I really don't see how you can "make" a parent sign a document stating how they are going to parent/educate their OWN children.

wow, I'm all for oaths of fidelity like that!! I'd gladly sign it, and maybe by the end of the year, you can finagle a suggestion for ALL the parents to be recognized on Catechetical Sunday, and they ALL can sign it!! (worked here for us this year! hooray!!) Our Priest even had all the parents stand up for a special blessing at all the Masses, along with the catechists/teachers...yippee!
