I read in Elizabeth's book about ordering art prints from the National Gallery of Art; this is such a wonderful idea- I know my kids will love it. But is the NGA website undergoing some kind of reorganization? I couldn't find any links to ordering prints. I wonder if I was looking in the wrong area?
In the meantime, I guess I can buy calendars and use the prints from those. Does anyone have another favorite place to order prints? I searched the forums and didn't see anything posted, so I thought I'd ask.

We follow the Ambleside picture study rotation. In this rotation, one artist is studied for a 12 week period and 6 of the artist's works are highlighted. One of the moderators sells the art prints. They come delivered in a nice folder and are printed on 8 1/2 by 11 photo paper.

You might check out your local public library. Last year, I discovered that our public library has a vast vertical file of 8x11 prints arranged by artist. I can check them out for 2 weeks at a time. The best part is, it's free!
I didn't know about this resource until I asked about art prints in the Art & Music section of our public library. The prints are not in the computerized card catalog, so I have to actually go to the library and look through the file to find what I want. But I have access to more prints than I would ever buy this way.

Thanks for your replies. Dawnie- you are soooo lucky to have those prints at your library. Mine has prints, but they are in big metal frames of all sizes and not organized in any fashion that I can tell. I had the reference desk check for me yesterday- nothing like what you describe. Rats. The man thought it was odd that I would want unframed prints (guess he's never had to lug two kids, a bag or two of books and a huge metal frame out library the door).
But the Ambleside print collections look promising, and maybe the NGA site will be back up soon. I also found in an archived post that the NGA loans out free material (you can order a catalog and the only cost is return media mall postage). So that all sounds promising...

I've read several threads from the archives but somehow missed that one. Thanks! I also read in one about the National Gallery of Art's free lending program. I ordered a copy of their catalog and noticed that several of the free unit studies come with prints (but it doesn't say what size).

May I recoommend a used books store? I really cashed in (or they did pending perspective I suppose  ) at ours yesterday. They have an art section and I found some decent over-sized books on 10 different artists displaying LOTS of there works for an awesome price. Each book was over a 100 pages and the pictures take up most of the books and the pages, with minimal text. I'm so excited over this find. The lady at the store said they get these in, but they don't go very fast. Which gave me a cue to haggle.

I sent an e-mail to the National Gallery of Art asking about the 11x14 prints. There is no cataolg, but you can request a listing of the prints available by title and artist:

I like the bigger prints because the kids can see the details more easily. Also, the 11x14 size fits perfectly on one half of my refrigerator. My kids are still young (2 and 4), and they like to stand right there and look at the prints on their level- also I see them touching the pictures, tracing shapes, feeling the edges of the prints, etc. With the 11x14 size, they can stand together in front of the print more easily.

I just sent away for the catalog last week, so for right now I am using an old calendar (free from a garage sale ), plus dh made a couple of 11x14 copies at work to tide me over. The 11x14 copies (from a scanned in picture) turned out better than I thought, but they are a short term fix. I would love to get some nice 11x14 "real" prints. Just waiting for my catalog....
