Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have season tickets for a family series being put on by the Phoenix Symphony and I was looking for some materials to help my boys (ages 4 & 5) understand the different instruments that are played.

I found a wonderful CD called Baby's First: Instruments of the Orchestra, that has snippets of the different instruments being played, and introduces each by name. It was only $3.99 at Amazon and is perfect for an introduction.

I also picked up 2 books that my boys have enjoyed: Meet the Orchestra and Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin

Just thought I'd share!

Melanie,

Here are a couple more you might want to check out:

The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra includes a CD narrated by Ben Kinglsey. This is an excellent book.

Classical Cats: A Children's Introduction to the Orchestra -- this has to be my kids' favorite CD about classical music. It can be silly, but has great explanations about the various parts of the orchestra and some pieces are played at the end. This is a great CD.

Have fun at the symphony! BTW, my 6yod just started playing violin and everytime she gets ready to practice her 3.5 yob yells out "zin, zin, zin, Maggie's violin"!

We love Zin Zin Zin...Lloyd Moss, the author, just retired from our local classical station after some 50 years on the air. We miss him as he was always so funny.

One of my all-time favorites is The Philharmonic gets Dressed.

Melanie, check with the PR office of the Phoenix Symphony and find out what music is being performed for each concert, then head to the library to listen to the pieces. The boys will enjoy the music they recognize even more!

There was a great article in Family Fun magazine a few years ago about this. It also mentioned The Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra and we got it out of the library and enjoyed it. You might try to find that issue at your library. There was a lot in the article itself.
We enjoy the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra Rainbow concerts and have found these to be the most fun! We just returned from one today about Powerful Percussion--a blast!! So you should learn so much at the Phoenix Symphony concert! Between these concerts and piano lessons I think we have music covered. Enjoy!
