We are using the basic Crayola now (in pots, it's not the watercolor). G has used it up quickly. The larger squeeze containers are pretty pricey but I'll spring for them if they're a good deal compared to whatever else is available. I'm most concerned w/ the washable factor at this stage in the game but he wants something richer than he can figure out to do w/ watercolors.

Paint totally stresses me out, much to the chagrin of my children, so I don't have a ton of experience. I like the tempera paints and have powdered that we mix up sometimes. It isn't washable in that it would likely stain clothing, but it washes off of hands and the table easily with soap and water. The powder is definitely more economical than the ready made stuff.
However, both Prang and Crayola make a ready made "washable" tempera. Is that what you have? I haven't tried it, but if you don't like Crayola, you might try Prang. I prefer their products most of the time.
Have you looked through the tempera options on Dick Blick? I find they have the best prices on most items.

Hmm... we use a lot of the Tempera paint from Michaels and AC Moore for general crafts and projects, but to be honest, I have never found it to be very washable. If my kids get it on their clothes, I try to wash it out immediately. That helps some.
When my kids were younger, I did have them wear aprons, which helped some, and in the summer I let them paint outside in their bathing suits.
It always annoys me to see washable on a paint label when I have never found that to be the case!

I think the term washable doesn't mean "non-staining". At least for industry specific standards.

Is is just that there won't be *paint* on your clothes? Like if you spill latex, it doesn't just stain, there is actual paint there that you can feel.

That's what I think! I remember a conversation in the past about this very thing, and there was a link to a paint that was truly washable.....
Ah, it was Suzanne to Lakeshore Learning
Lakeshore sells other paints, but they don't say "washable and non-staining". The colors aren't as brilliant, but that's okay with me.
It was a few years ago but I think it was AC Moore that I read labels for a bit and found some paints that also said non-staining and truly washable.

Oh wow, LL seems to have a lot of options for fun things!
And I do really want fully washable, because I want to be able to rotate activities a bit. The older two are old enough that they don't need hands-on supervision, but young enough that the occasional paint accident will happen. I'd like to be able to let them paint often.

I love the paint from Lakeshore Learning. I bought the non-spill containers, colored coded paintbrushes and the carrying case. It was worth every.single.penny. Clean-up is a breeze and it is washable.
