Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hey Kathryn, or any of you British CMers out there. My dc and I have just been learning about the Lord Baltimore and the Calvert family, and the Carrolls of Carrollton, and we were wondering if those Old English Families still exist, do they have family castles of note, are they still distinctly Catholic, or have they been "absorbed"? Are there resources out there that talk about the old Catholic families of England, and their current domains?

Kind of a funky question, I know, that exposes my extreme ignorance on the subject... but I woke up yesterday thinking about our school discussions on this topic and that handsome Leonard Calvert!

Isn't there a old-time Catholic family "castle" in Yorkshire -- I'm vaguely remembering going to one with priest holes and paraphernalia all around. The family still lives there and are still Catholic, I think....

The Yorkshire area -- Ripon, Harrogate, etc -- seem to have had many hold-outs and thus, many Catholic martyrs.

I'm afraid I don't know anything about the Calverts of the Carrolls, but there are a few old Catholic recusant families still living in their original homes.

Lulworth Castle in Dorset belonged to a recusant family who I believe are still Catholic. The castle itself was gutted by fire in the 1920s, but the Chapel - the first Catholic Chapel to be built in England after the Reformation, I think - is a separate building and survived intact. Looking at the website it appears the first American bishop was consecrated there (look under "Lulworth Castle and Park" for the Chapel).

Another surviving family are the Stonors of Stonor Park. Their house and chapel were closely associated with St.Edmund Campion. We only live an hour's drive away, but I've never visited. I think I should make it a priorty trip for this summer

Last summer we visited this old house at Baddesley Clinton in Warwickshire, which still has three priest holes. It was used as a safe house by Jesuits. I think it later passed out of Catholic ownership, but in the 19th century the then owners converted to the Catholic Faith and added a rather nice chapel. At the end of the tour there was a room with a mock priest's hole for kids to play in (steps up, trapdoor down to a "secret" room underneath). Very fun!
