Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wow...those are hefty titles, eh?

Any feedback from those of you who have used The Story of Mankind by van Loon vs the new reprinted edition of Hillside Education’s The World's Story? I already have “The Story of Mankind” and tried to use it with my then 6th grader, reading independently didn’t quite work. He said the other day, “I really liked the book, but got lost if you weren’t reading it out loud with me and then discussing it together.”
Now that he is ending his 7th grade year, I wish there was something he could read a little bit more independently, but maybe that’s not the point...maybe he just really needs me to read it out loud and discuss. I am not adverse to that at all, it’s just that little time factor.
Any feedback from those of you who have seen both? Thanks!

I really like the look of “The World’s Story” but if it is pretty much the same as the other book, I am not sure if I should buy a repeat.

Do you have a kindle or computer that he could use for reading? The O'Neil book is available here on Archive.org. You could start out using the online file or even printing from the pdf to give it a run before you invest in the hard copy.

It's been a while since I last read The Story of Mankind, but we have The World's Story, and I'm really looking forward to using it next year.

I know Van Loon was a theosophist, and while I can't remember specific anti-Christian content in Story of Mankind, I know there's some discussion about that at Ambleside Online. By contrast, Elizabeth O'Neill was (probably) an Anglican who deals quite fairly and sympathetically with the Catholic side in the Reformation. I like that, obviously!

And the Hillside edition is lovely, with very nice illustrations. We haven't used it yet, but I'm planning to have my rising 6th-grader read it over the next two years, so in pretty small increments per sitting. Overall the prose style is clear and manageable, I think -- not something a reader at that stage would get too bogged down in, especially if he was reading only one short section at a time.

Thanks so much, Ladies! I think I'm leaning towards buying The World's Story. Lindsay, I took your advice and downloaded it and we read some today as we waited between doc appts. Just 15 mins of reading out loud rabbit trailed into discussions on Church teaching on the beginnings of Man....evolution.....and other interesting topics. I now remember taking a look at the sample quite a while ago and the discussion on MA's FB page about the printing of it.
Thanks! I'll weigh in later after we read more.
