Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Mary,

For China, I would suggest the Little Pear series by Eleanor Frances Lattimore. I'm currently reading these books with my boys (10, 6 and 4).

Written in 1931, these are really sweet stories about a 5 year-old boy living in a Chinese village with his family. Wonderful detail about the Chinese year and village life. Little Pear gets into lots of mischief so there's a lot of opportunity to talk about right and wrong as you read .

Another good book is Happy New Year by Demi -- beautiful illustrations. Chinese New Year begins next Sunday I believe.

Try going through the Picture Book units at the Homeshare website by Ami. A few months ago she put up quite a few units for Asia and Africa (lots of them by moms from this list!).

Mary,
I don't know how old your children are, but the book "Homesick" by Jean Fritz is all about her childhood in China in the '30s. My dd read it when she was 11 and really enjoyed it, and *I* enjoyed it, too. Fascinating reading. Also, the movie, "Inn of the Sixth Happiness" with Ingrid Bergmann, takes place in China and is wonderful. We all LOVED this movie.

For Greece, the old Disney/Haley Mills movie, "The Moonspinners", takes place in Crete. Though it's not really heavy on Greek history or anything, it does show the ruins and capture the mysterious mood of the ruins at Knossos. You might also check out D'Aulaire's book of Greek Myths. It is available on tape, maybe cd, and is great, very appealing to the younger set.
