Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This year we are studying the Middle Ages. We've read some really wonderful books and our current "in school" read is A Proud Taste for Miniver and Scarlet. Reading this has led to an interest in the debate b/t St. Bernard of Clairvaux and Abbot Suger re splendor leading us toward or barring us from Our Lord. This led us to our current "out of school" read aloud called Boy Knight of Reims. Ohhh, this is a lovely book about a boy named Jean whose family for generations have dedicated their work to the Cathedral: FAther is a mason, Mother embroiderer, grandfather a gold smith. Now it is finally Jean's turn to be apprenticed as a goldsmith. The family is beautifully devout (their home is dedicated to the Holy Virgin and their lives in general are a testament to lovely, devout Catholicism). Anyway, he prays and prays to the angels for something and . . . oh it's really a lovely book. Now my kitchen table is a workshop with piles of clay modeling books, gargoyle books, cathedral books . . . What a fun time!

How wonderful! There are many great Middle Ages books and resources posted both in Elizabeth's booklist and here on the board (in Across Time and Place).

We just finished A Proud Taste... and the boys enjoyed it much more than most historical chapter books. (They aren't big history fans.)
