I don't know if you have been following the Picture Book Forum the past two weeks, but it has been producing several great suggestions that would probably fit the bill.

Where Was George Washington? - the bust of Washington that is being made in the book is displayed at the museum (and replica in the house). It's fun to see things you read about.
George Washington's Cows - the illustrations show various rooms at Mount Vernon quite realistically- would be fun to compare when visiting.
George Washington's Teeth -all about GW's tooth problems. Some of his dentures are on display in the museum at Mount Vernon so they would get to see them.

Now here is brand new book I saw briefly at the bookstore last week. It looks wonderful. I have it on reserve at the library but it's still on order - hope it arrives by his B-day next week. (If not I may just have to buy it myself. ) - Farmer George Plants a Nation
It focuses on George's innovation as a farmer. So much of the Mt. Vernon tour highlights George Washington's contributions to farming as well as the struggles he faced as a farmer. We mostly hear of him as the military man and president. He really considered himself a farmer, first and foremost. Though I haven't read it in it's entirety I'm betting this would be a perfect book for pre-Mt. Vernon visits.

Are you going to Mt.Vernon for President's Day? Someone just told me about this a week or so ago -- sounds like it's really cool. Problem is, we can't go this year because the way I found out about it was that the person who told me asked me to drive our boys from their jobs to their Montgomery College classes that day. Oh well, next year....

Ruth, since you live close enough to go a few times a year, I would look into camparing the cost of a one-day visit with a year's pass. My kids would just LOVE an opportunity to visit some place often, to make it their "own"

.......we LOVED our visit there this summer........and the "talks" they give are wonderful

George Washington by Albert Marrin is an excellent biography, as all of his books are. Would be good for your 9yr and up........maybe your 7yo???? Depends on the kids.

We're also enjoying If You Grew Up With George Washington which ties along nicely with George Washington's Breakfast. After reading Jean Fritz's book, ds was ready to delve into this chapter book about life during GW's times.

And A Picture Book of George Washington by David Adler. His titles are lackluster, but I think the book is well-done and my son enjoys it.

I am interested in Farmer George Plants a Nation. Can anyone give a review of this one. The summary is intriguing. Our library does not have it in circulation and I wanted to get some feedback before I order it - it's $14.

Some other books we have checked out and enjoy that aren't picture books:

President George Washington by David Adler, Level Two reading level.

And George Washington by Ingri and Edgar Parin D'Aulaire.

I know I'm not the original person to recommend these books, but I thought it would be nice to keep a list of Washington books.

Ds wants to go through each president, first by visiting their house. Now I can oblige with several presidents' houses in VA, but not sure if each president has such a great array of picture and read aloud books! It's interesting how he's trying to grasp the concept of past and present, living and not living, -- the idea of history.

John Adams is next. Anyone?
