MacBeth mentioned this on the email list, but I thought I'd mention it here as it looks pretty good:
The CM Intl Institute for Educational Research and Study (whew, that's a mouthful  ) is sponsoring a first annual conference on education, Designing a Living Curriculum -- June 2 thru June 4 in Boiling Springs, NC (which is roughly an hour west of Charlotte, NC and about 1-1/2 hr NE of Greenville, SC).
The folks that started the group are homeschoolers and one of the guys speaking has a couple of articles in the CM book "When Children Love to Learn".

Dear Mary,
I'll be interested to hear how it goes, particularly since it is being organized by homeschoolers. I didn't find the When Children Love to Learn book particularly helpful, mostly because it had such a "school" feel to it. I don't want to bring school home, even if it's a CM school.
Interstingly, I was talking to a friend about this the other day. She is a former teacher, now at home with two little boys. I shared how difficult it is coming from behind a teacher's desk to being a mom at home who wants to educate her children without school. It takes a while to shake off the school mentality and to let go of the whole paradigm.
OTOH, it would be interesting, from a purely academic point of view, to see how CM principles are applied in inner-city public schools. What a gift that could be for those children! And what a challenge for the educators.

And I, on the other hand, thought When Children Love to Learn was excellent! It's certainly one of my favorite "CM" books. It's immensely practical and gives such a clear picture of what a CM education truly looks like (that is, I think as CM intended it--not necessarily as it HAS to be). I was able to just buzz past the "school" language and gain quite a lot of insight. My dh read it too and it really helped him understand some things. In fact, he liked it almost as much as I did.  But hey, to each his own. For me it was a great read.
Have a great time at the conference Mary. I'm looking forward to hearing all about it!

I agree with Michele -- When Children Love to Learn is a great overview of how CM is applied in reality, in different settings, etc. Of course, I like Michele's MA curriculum too , so there you go! Also, I'm one of those that basically inhales books about subjects I like -- and like reading different views so I can take what I like from all (and leave the rest behind....)
One thing that looks great about this conference is the scheduling of time with the founders of the group that's running it -- lots of time to just sit and talk so I'll be doing that alot (one of my favorite pastimes, actually). Because of the location, you've got a captive audience for a few days and I'm hoping to really pick some brains.
How 'bout this -- I'll post my notes from the conference and anyone who has specific questions can ask me after that?

Hello Everyone,
My name is Carroll Smith and I am one of the people getting the conference at Gardner-Webb Unversity together. My life is consumed at the moment with getting everything together, from details like name tags to preparing lectures/discussions on curriculum. I noticed someone thought I was part of the When Children Love to Learn book. I am not. I am a former public school principal in Roanoke, VA, where as a school we implemented Mason's ideas. While a principal I completed my doctorate in education and did my dissertation on Mason and now work at GWU as an education assistant professor. (I grew up in eastern NC.) I live in SC, north of Spartanburg near I-26. Even after years of studying Mason's work, I still have lots to learn. We would love to have you join us for the conference. One of the primary reasons for the conference is for people to connect and build relationships with others who are pursuing Mason. We also want to encourage homeschoolers be they Catholic or Protestant, private schoolers and public schoolers to get together and network and maybe develop ways of supporting each other. We will also be annoucing a joint effort with the Armitt Library and Museum in Ambleside, England where Mason's archives are stored. Although I am not a chatter online, I hope to join you here when I can. I would love to support your efforts as much as I can. Thanks,

Hey y'all:
I'm back from the conference and will be posting my summary and notes etc probably in the next day or so. Just to let you know, it was a great conference -- about 75% homeschool and 25% school personnel -- probably 80-100 participants in all.
There are 5 CM schools in Atlanta, 2 in my neck of the woods (I didn't know this before the conference) in upstate SC and 1 in Virginia that were all represented. There were also a few folks there looking to start CM schools -- a couple of ladies who are veteran CM homeschoolers and want to bring her ideas to the forefront.
Most of the homeschoolers were Ambleside Online folks -- so predominantly Protestants (maybe 2 active Catholics, including me).
I'll give you more solid details in the next day or two -- once I get my notes organized.
