the unschooling books by Gareth Lewis -- One to One and Unqualified Learning -- these both sound so good and I'm so close to making the "leap" into Unschooling... would these be a good read if I'm caught up in the "there's no way my kids would do anything but sit and play Xbox" philoophy of schooling?

Leonie and some of you other veterans? What do you think?

Mary,

I didn't like the high school book as, to me, it seemed to downplay academics a bit too much. As though unschooled high school age children would not be interested in academics or university. A lot of the ideas were still hands on, like gardening and cooking - and while those are great, I don't need a book for high school describing these areas.

Academic snobbishness on my part? I hope not.

I don't think you're being academically snobbish, I think you're being honest! I think I'll order both books as most of my resources are "inside the box" thinking and I need more "outside the box".

Have you seen the Lewis' websites:

Freedom in Educatoin is more for the parents (although their eldest daughter has taken over the webmastering)

The Jamboree is run by the three Lewis children and looks like it has some fun stuff on it!

I have visited the Freedom in Education website but not the Jamboree one - thank you!

When we lived in Perth ( over six years ago now) our local library had another homeschooling book by Gareth Lewis - I think the title was something like "You Don't Have To Go To School." Had sample schedules and info on how to deal with the (UK) authorities.
