Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I thought it best to start a new thread for the upcoming Winter Olympics.

I posted this message about Amanda Bennett's brand new Winter Olympic 4-week study under the rabbit trail thread:

"At last, I'm coming up out of my pile of writing to catch a fresh breath of air and announce an introductory special for the Winter Olympics Unit Study!

From now through 1/16/06, the four-week Winter Olympics Unit Study is on sale for only $9.00. The regular price for this study after this date will be $12.95. Here's the link: http://unitstudy.com/winter_olympics.htm

The CDROMs will begin shipping 1/16/06 - so order now and let the games begin February 10th!

Thanks, as always, for your patience and support while I work to
provide the best studies that I can -- you are great!

Blessings,
Amanda B.
www.unitstudy.com

I've used her unit studies in the past (Lighthouse, Ships, Thanksgiving, and Christmas) and it IS worth the $9.00.

I know my kiddos will be watching carefully. This sounds like just the ticket! Thanks for passing on the info, Cay!

Olympics fans,

This sounds like fun! If anyone's looking for more info on Torino or wants to take on an Italy-related rabbit trail (ancient, modern, or in-between), please let me know. I've done a lot of research on the Torino venues, the city of Torino, etc. and also have a bunch of stuff on the ancient Appian Way (a friend and I developed a Girl Scout special interest patch on this topic) and some of the regions of this marvelous country. Perhaps I can save you some legwork.

I'm looking forward to this in a big way (finally, school credit for watching the figure skating finals!).

Ciao,

How about a study of Turin-born outdoorsman, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati to tie in with the Winter Olympics topic. Pauline Books has a good biography of him in their Encounter the Saints Series.

Tonight, Jan. 19 on EWTN's Life on the Rock (8:00 ET), the guest is a Catholic mom and cross country skier who just made the US Winter Olympic team. She has chosen as her patron, Blessed Frassati. It looks like the encore showings of this episode will be Friday, Jan. 20 at 1:00 AM and 1:00 PM (ET).

Here's a link to her website - Rebecca Dussault. She's a Colorado girl

Thanks for the heads up, Mary. I'd like to watch it.

I was also thinking about trying various ethnic foods. I need to do a bit of research on that one though.

here's one from http://www.saltandlighttv.org/prog_slprog_cookingSaints.html :

Pasta a la Frassati (Tagliatelle con i funghi)
Ingredients (serves 6):

    * 4 tbs. olive oil
    * 1/2 onion
    * 8 oz. porcini mushrooms
    * 1/2 cup beef broth
    * 1 tbs. parsley, chopped
    * 1 lb. tagliatelle
    * 2 tbs. grated Parmigiano
    * 1.5 tbs. butter
    * salt & pepper

Cooking instructions:

   1. Add finely chopped onions to oil
   2. Add sliced mushrooms & saute for 2 min.
   3. Add broth, salt & pepper to taste
   4. Remove from heat
   5. Cook tagliatelle al dente
   6. Toss in skillet butter & mushroom sauce
   7. Serve with grated Parmigiano

what kind of ethnic dishes were you looking for?

And an additional website of Rebecca Dussault where she talks about her strong faith
and her plan to homeschool her children (she currently has a 4 yr. old son)!

Here are her ambitions as listed on the website:
-To live heroic virtue and become a Saint
-Have several more children and educate them at home
-Become an oblate of the Community of St. John
-Become a midwife
-Own a small farm/ranch
-Grow and shoot my own food. Live nearly self-sustained
-Learn to knit and sew

I think we all have just found a favorite Olympian to be rooting for in February!!!

Mary......how cool!!!!! We are planning to watch Rebecca on EWTN tomorrow and learn more about Bl. Frassati. How great is that; to have a devout Catholic athlete to follow in this year's olympics??

Way cool! I had such fun checking out her website.
THIS is what connections are all about.

I didn't seem where it mentioned her planning to hs her dc but I did see that she was hsed:

"At age 18 I graduated from Climbing High Homeschool. I decided not to go to college but instead said yes to my child hood sweetheart who asked me to marry him. "

So not only is she a Catholic mom, but she's a hser!!! How neat!

She also adds:

"Even though I would love to keep racing and traveling around the world I do have other priorities. I am looking forward to having more children and living a simple life in the mountains. In reality I know that I would have to compete for a decade or more to really exhaust my potential. I guess family is just way too important to me. I want to have more kids and be there for them. Somebody has to be around to teach them how to ski."

And I noticed that her ds's name is Tabor and one of her favorite places is Mt. Tabor Monastery in California.

It's on this page "About Rebecca" in the "My Ambitions" sidebar on the left.

Wow Mary! This woman is great -- what an inspiration to young Catholic athletes. I've suggested to dh that he have his class root for her too --

I love her statements about how important is her faith and how she gives it all to God!

THANKS so much for sending this link.

This is wonderful!!!

Back to the food thing for a bit...the famous dish of Chicken Marengo (that Napoleon supposedly brought back to France from Italy) also comes from the Piemonte region. And then there's bagna cauda, a hot oil/garlic/anchovy/butter combo you serve in a little pot at table and dip hunks of bread into it...

Now I am really hungry.

Better eat before the EWTN broadcast on our skier!

My dds like Italian foods for the most part as well as food from Ireland and the UK. I'm thinking about trying various foods from some of the other countries like China, Japan, Greek, French, etc. I thought this would be a good way to expand our horizons (and perhaps waists ).

I hope to get some ideas together in the next few weeks and post them.

Hi Families,

We emailed Rebecca Dussault and this was our reply:

"Peceli Family,

Wonderful to hear from you! I am glad you found our website. It is still a little under construction. Did you happen to watch our appearance on Life on the Rock for the EWTN network a couple of days ago? It was wonderful, but unfortunately all of the reruns have already aired. My husband and I were also homeschooled and plan to do the same for our children.

In Christ,
Rebecca Dussault"

Too cool!

We saw the show - it was really remarkable. This couple is so awesome. Even though the reruns have aired you can still listen to archived audio of the show. The interview with them starts about 19 minutes into the episode.

Oh Wow! We forgot to turn on the tv for the very final rerun and we remembered about 11:20 to switch it on. So it looks like we saw the whole thing!

She is such an excellent influence for teenagers. She was talking about how difficult it is to be the only Catholic teammate; one of the difficulties is getting to Mass every Sunday, but no matter what it entailed she always made it every Sat. night or Sun. One time she had to take an $80 taxi ride down the mountain to town for Mass. She also quit skiing competitively for awhile when it got too hard to handle being on the road amidst too much immorality.

This is a total change from Miss Rebecca , but the comment about "Chariots of Fire" made me think to ask what other Olympic-themed movies might we put in our quiver for an Olympic Unit Study?

Although I haven't seen it, I *think* "The Cutting Edge" is about Olympic figure skating. Anyone out there seen it who can comment?
