Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Suzanne,

My daughter and I took a short little rabbit trail about wolves since we are reading Little House on the Prairie. When we were reading about Pa riding with the wolves and the wolves surrounding the house, my daughter didn't seem very "impressed". She said they were "just dogs." I said, "Oh really????" So, we looked up wolves online and I think she was surprised at how big they were. Then, she said that probably said, "Ruff, Ruff" and at this point I think she was joking, so we listened to wolves howling online, wolves that were in distress or angry etc. So, that was a fun little rabbit trail! I think we will take other rabbit trails as we read this book and maybe even cook a few recipes from "The Little House Cookbook." I was waiting and waiting for her to FINALLY get into Little House. Yippee!!

It's hard to tell anymore what is our normal course of study and what is the rabbit trail.

We are just finishing up a month of geography study and map making. That led to some Lewis and Clark study (LOL, I keep saying Lois and Clark. Isn't that a TV show? )

The recent snows are leading to an interest in tracks and tracking. And being detectives.

Thanks for the mention of Abraham Lincoln, I have to remember to take out my Jim Weiss CD on him.

Like Mamamoon we are following the changing seasons and movement of the earth along with Journey North and their Mystery Class.

Of course we are doing the Lincoln Bicentennial trail, too. This thread in Across Time and Place Forum is tracking unit study ideas - I debated putting it here in the Rabbit Trail thread but was trying to jump start some living history discussion so put it there. Anyone doing Lincoln studies please post ideas and resources.

Also in progress a trail we found off of our Lincoln study - Langston Hughes, poet study. His first, and one of his most famous, poems "The Negro Speaks of Rivers" has a stanza reflecting on Abraham Lincoln.

We're also on the "blues" trail as we will be attending a local educational concert on the history of American Blues music later this month. We are going along with our own Gwen (momwise) who just informed me that her husband's grandfather was a well known early blues artist - Pee Wee Crayton. Isn't that cool!

Nature trail - identifying trees in winter...

We are also doing the Journey North Mystery Sites! I am so excited about that project. I think I would also like my dd to start a couple of the other projects ... perhaps the Tulip Gardens (we were asked to plant one by JN for next year) and one or two of the migrations. I will let her pick (maybe the monarch butterflies; they stopped at our home in the States on their way to Mexico).

Currently she is doing a Rocks and Minerals study, but she is about finished with that project. She is also doing Flags of the World; it is really helping her to learn her geography of the globe (my ds is helping some with this project).

I am inspired by MaryM to do something for Lincoln although I am starting a bit late. And also, I read in Marilyn's blog about a faith folder for St. Paul. I think I may have her start this for Lent. She really enjoys these hands on activities!

And Suzanne, Journey North is for all ages. My ds is 16, but he loves geography, so he really loves the program. I am just now realizing that there is so much more at that site!

Sorry I have rambled on so much. Guess that morning cup of coffee has started to kick in. I just love all these rabbit trails!

I meant to start Journey North but got distracted.

We have been doing a mini math adventure as I plan for a hands-on math day. Then, Thomas has asked me to teach him how to paint since our art co-op fell apart. I'm going to use   Children and Painting one or two afternoons a week, and I'm sure everyone will want to participate. I can see that it will go along nicely with our art curriculum and may lead to another trip to the National Gallery. Our music and history continues to meander along. And I will find math in all of those just because I really like math.

But really this month is saved every year for a black history study which I think is going to lead to other oppressed peoples, the Holocaust, and the boys and Bill going to the museum in DC. That's my plan for it, but the kids always take things their own direction so we shall see.

Since as homeschoolers we can work more one on one with children, it could be done with younger ones than a schoool might be successful with. It depends on how much you want/expect them to do a lot of the work or their own, or do it mostly yourself with them tagging along. How much they really understand and get from it will vary with age. A younger student can participate but will only "understand" to a certain level - really only get the basics. We did it first 3 years ago. My daughter (then 10) got much of it but did need help, the youngest (then 6) had most of it go over his head. Then last year my daughter (then 12) had a much better understanding of the science behind it - son (then 8) was more interested and picked up more understanding though still couldn't get the more technical aspects and didn't have the sustained interest.

So my analysis is that younger elementary can participate with much assistance - likely only going to be able to get a overview understanding of it (but that is a good basis for later). Late elementary (10+) and Middle school get a much better grasp of it. High schoolers should be able to take it to a higher level of understanding of how this all fits together.

Oh, and personality interest would play a big part - if a child is drawn to this kind of study I think they would be interested and able to focus on it much earlier.

Speaking of our Little House rabbit trail...I checked out "The Little House Reader", mainly for me , but my 7 year old daughter too a real shine to it! She has been walking around reading poems from the book that Laura wrote all week. When she says them, she does it very dramatically, since she thinks that is how you recite poetry after watching an "Anne of Green Gables" movie in which she recites a poem with real drama. It is so hysterical to hear her recite "America" by Laura Ingalls Wilder in a very dramatic fashion. So, now poetry is a rabbit trail!

Lisa's comment reminded me, too, Suzanne, that there are different classes - some are much more hands-on and understandable for a younger student. I was speaking specifcially in my post about the Journey North Sunlight/Mystery Class - it's probably the most involved of the classes/activities offered on the Journey North site.

We are new to rabbit trails. We celebrated Groundhogs Day and from that we meandered onto weather. We have had such a wonderful week this week. I think we may stay here for a little while as the kids are having so much fun.

I am looking at everyone's trails and I am in awe that some of you are doing numerous trails. Yay for you! I am 'one trail' kind of girl. We have decided that after weather we would like to learn about rainforests. I am excited about this one.

We're off onto a whole trail of birds and nesting. I have to say... I really, really discouraged this because I wanted to wait until we were more into spring weather for this study, but the kids are completely drawn into it...so that's where we are. THEN!!! I read about how St. Valentine's day was associated with love and romance because the belief has always been that birds choose their nesting mates on February 14!!! So, not that I wouldn't have been on board anyway, but now I'm all fired up and our February nature table is set up to reflect nesting birds.

Suzanne---
MaryM is right - some of the Journey North studies are more suited to youngers. We are following the Robins. They have a whole section of information to print for kids on Robins. The children are learning the song of the Robin. We don't "dig" into it as much as others might, but it does prompt some great learning opportunities and a wonderful focus on seasonal happenings. We're watching for the Robins, Hummingbirds, Weather and Songbirds, and we're also watching out for our first red winged-blackbird.

And...now, I'm looking for that Jim Weiss Abraham Lincoln CD!
