Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're off onto a whole trail of birds and nesting. I have to say... I really, really discouraged this because I wanted to wait until we were more into spring weather for this study, but the kids are completely drawn into it...so that's where we are.

I was going to add that this is actually a very practical time to study nesting, because even though birds might not yet be nesting you can so easily find old nests. Late winter, before the trees bud provides great viewing of old nest locations you wouldn't be able to see in the spring. So this is a great time to compare nesting locations, materials, sizes, etc.

Oh, and a bird that will actually be nesting right now is the Great-horned owl. They mate much earlier in the winter and are nesting by this point.

You're right! It actually *is* a good time for study...and I wouldn't have really dug into it without the children's enthusiasm.

I'm going to add the Great Horned Owl to our "watch and listen" list as we nature walk in our "patch of forest"! That is very good to know. We have an owl back there, but I haven't yet identified him...I need to take the time to research this. Thanks for the prompt!

And...the brown thrasher is looking for a mate right now and may be nesting soon! This whole rabbit trail was prompted because a brown thrasher, uncommon in our area now, has made our front garden his new home! He's quite a bossy fellow, but we think he might be nesting nearby!

The bluebirds have come seeking their familiar nesting site, and we spotted our first meadowlark of the season a few days ago.

All this to say that the children's lead was a gentle nudge in the right direction for us. Our rabbit trail coupled with the Journey North studies holds the promise for great seasonal observations!

This is two months late, but I want to add that my ds (8) is really into the Dust Bowl. He saw a thing on History channel and has been asking a million questions. He has always been fascinated with weather, so this fit in nicely. We got a book about it out of the library today. I can see history, ecology, science, economics all working into this. Plus, my family survived it, so it's even cooler.
