A friend and I are starting a homeschool book club for our two county homeschool group. We are having trouble however deciding upon the age division and books for the younger group.
We were thinking 7-9 and 10-12. However we are having trouble finding books for the younger age group. Most of the books we come across seem to be in the 9-12 age bracket.
If you participate in a book club do your younger children read with the parent? Do you have any suggestions for books in that age group?

Our homeschool group has a bookclub that breaks it down into 3 groups that are approximate based on reading level: 4-8, 9-12, 13 and up. Our youngest group is using Catholic Mosaic. My daughters (age 9 & 11) are in the middle group. I have been doing the books as a read aloud or have gotten them on audio for them to read along. We have read The Cricket in Times Square so far.

3 of my dc are in separate book clubs.
Ds age 9 is in a club, Pageturners, for ages 8-9
Their booklist:
Clementine by Pennybacker
Search for Delicious by Babbitt
Whipping Boy by Fleischman
Rabbit Hill, by Lawson
King of the Wind, by Henry
The School Mouse, by King-Smith
Call It Courage, by Sperry
Tale of Despereaux, by diCamillo
Cricket in Times Square, by Selden
Another ds age 11 is in a group, Book Lovers Club, for ages 10-12 (they lean more older in this group) and then my dd age 12 (almost 13) is in a group of just girls based on grade level, 7th and 8th.

My middle son (8) is in the younger group (7-10s) and usually I read the books to/with him. He could read the books on his own, but I usually read them aloud so we can experience the book together. This gives him a better footing for the discussions at group.
Titles so far this year have been:
Sep: Can't recall (J was sick and missed this month)
Oct: I, Houdini by Lynne Reid Banks (OK, actually I didn't care for this one  )
Nov: Gooseberry Park by Cynthia Rylant (I did this one  )
Dec: Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allen Crowe by James Howe
Jan: Trumpet of the Swan by EB White
Feb: The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall
Mar: TBA (might be Black Beauty)
Apr: The Van Gogh Cafe by Cynthia Ryland (I'm not familiar with this one)
May:TBA
As I mentioned in my email, my hsgroup is not Christian, but secular. But these ladies are mindful, caring moms an (most of) the choices have been good.

Oh I failed to mention that the leaders of all of my dc's groups insist that each child read it themselves, nothing out loud to them. They say it's their way of being sure children of the appropriate reading level are in the club. If they need to be read to, then their club isn't for them yet.
They also take a comprehension quiz at the beginning of each club. It's been a nice way to gauge how they are doing. (At the end of the year, the child with the best scores on their quizzes gets a Barnes & Noble gift card)
Besides book discussions they have a fun snack associated with the book. They also usually go over some sort of literary theme in each book. Each leader also keeps a fun book scrapbook. At some point during club time, each child draws a picture of something associated with the book into a scrapbook. The leader keeps the book, but is cute to see what the kids draw each month. Sometimes you can tell who liked and who didn't like the book just by seeing how hard they tried on their picture, kwim  .

Thank you ladies for your replies and Dawn... I think you can disregard my e-mail back to you this morning. I didn't have a chance to check in here and see that you answered most of my questions. 
KackyK, do you have the same leader each month or do the parents take turns leading?

It's the same mom who does the entire club all year at her home. I have 2 friends who do the 3 clubs...one friend does both the older girls club and the youngest club and then another friend does the inbetween age. But the friend who does the inbetween age just copies what the other friend has done in the past (did that make sense?) They meet just once a month for 1 1/2 hours.
