Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our little Joseph drew this a few minutes ago. I'm so proud of him. He draws the neatest caricatures.

I just added a few more.

How do you help your children develop their talent? My family keeps insisting that we put him in school just so he could have Art class. Can this be done at home?

I would say he has a gift. I would make sure to give a gifted child space and freedom in nature and provide materials for him to use and leave him to grow. I would be worried that art lessons at his age may interfere with his natural ability. When he gets to the end of his limits and wants advise, maybe many years on, he'll know where to look for it. Maybe it is his great blessing to be in a homeschool environment rather than a school one so that he can cultivate and enjoy his gift at the right pace for him.

I'm with Mama Moon... you could look at something like the Waldorf art, and maybe when he is older he will be asking for lessons... but if he seems happy now (and he certainly is talented) then just give him time to do what he loves!

You can develop his interest/skill at home by using library books. (We checked out tons for my now 12yo and also bought several that he found interesting.) If there are any independent art classes available, you might ask your son if he'd be interested in taking one. (Here there are classes taught by homeschooling parents, as well as continuing ed. classes through the city & local colleges.)

Well, considering that I only learned how to draw well during ONE YEAR of school, I'd say leave him alone at home. He obviously has a knack for it.

Incidentally, that one year in school where I (and my classmates) learned to draw, it was based on the lessons presented in the book Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain...which is really more about the art of seeing than about drawing. When and if he wants, he'd be able to do the lessons himself. Oh, and when I took a drawing class in college, what book did we use??? Yes, the one I mentioned above!

Great pics!
