Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been struggling with aiding my oldest son (7th grade) with logic/reasoning skills. *sigh* I figure he needs to literally be taught the ABC's of thinking logicly.

Can anyone here tell me of the Traditional and Material Logic 1 programs? I was nervous with the whole publisher issue at first, but when I saw they recommend 2 of Peter Kreefts books for this course, I figure they sure can't be anti-catholic. Right?

Can anyone offer feedback on how these materials are used? What does a day/week using them look like? Are the DVD's really a requirement? I'd rather do without them, but I'd also rather buy them if they are genuinely needed to suppliment the books.

TIA

I used Memoria Press logic with my oldest ds. He is a "think out of the box person." I begin by monitoring his work, checking his answers, but when he moved on to Book II, he did it own his own with help from dh if he needed it.

The program is not anti-Catholic. And it did teach him the skills of logic. I am starting it this year with my dd. Her brother might have to tutor her as I am at a loss in the logic department!

I've been thinking about using logic also. I'm a little vague though as to purpose, course outline. Would you be able to fill me in?

Traditional Logic is an introduction to Formal Logic. It is the study of the classical syllogism. There is no discussion of informal fallacies although they do discuss formal fallacies. It is designed as a one semester course to be followed by TL II. The major sections in the TOC are Simple Apprehension (Term), Judgment (Proposition), and Deductive Interence (Syllogism).

I found that my ds covered the material with the help of the DVD. He really loved the course and is finishing up TL II. I am starting my dd on TL I this year, but her brother will have to be her tutor because I am not logical!

Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions. Sorry it has taken me so long to respond.

My ds used the book over the summer as an "enrichment" course. Although he found it easy he did not enjoy it at all - repetitive questions, dry and boring would be his assessment. I did not realize there were dvds which might have helped enliven it. That said, we also tried LCI after Prima and he did not like that format so it could be Memoria P is not a good fit for him.

When we use it, it only takes about 10 minutes a day. I usually do it with the kids because it sticks better that way. They seem to think it's at least mildly interesting and not very difficult, and at least one of the kids developed a longterm interest in logic as a result.

Cheryl Lowe is a convert to Catholicism and Martin Cothran is sympathetic to Catholicism (I think he is an Anglican but am not sure??).

I like the way the book has the student skim the chapter for an overview, and then read it again bit by bit and answer questions.   I found this approach carried over to better study skills in other subjects.... a side benefit
