Here in Denver, we can have 30 books on request/hold at any time. I usually have just about 30 (and sometimes have to cancel a hold so I can get another one  ). Anyway, we use our Library ALOT!
I just noticed that I only have 10! books on hold -- and a couple of those are just to see if I'm interested in them ... so I'm nervous. I must not be doing enough rabbit trails, or we're in a lull or something.
Anyway, what subjects do you have in your hold queues? Any great read-alouds you're waiting on, or nature books or subject-specific rabbit trails? Please share so I can keep my library pulling books for me.....

I use the online library catalog and the hold system a lot. Most of the time, I have enough holds to pick up that I don't even browse the shelves. All the ladies who work the checkout counter know me by name. We can check out 35 books at a time and I pretty much always have that many checked out. Right now I have 42 books in my hold queue and 23 of them are in for me to pick up. I'll be going to the library later today. Right now most of what is in my queue are picture books for the toddler boy. There are quite a few spring books and I also have De Paola's Jamie O'Rourke books waiting for me.

We have just finished ocean life with my 5 and 7 yo, we are now going to start Australia and Australian animals. The Great Barrier Reef was a great point to make the switch. I have about 15 books requested on that subject.
I have another bunch of picture books about springtime.
I have also requested BOSTON JANE from over on the living literature thread as a read along for everyone. That sounds like a good read.
We have no limit on the number of requests or the number of books we have checked out at one time. I always have a real lot.

I'm limited because we are only allowed 15 requests at a time, including books waiting for you to pick up. I usually have the limit, but I just picked up 10 and haven't requested new ones...yet.

I only have only a few currently on hold. I rarely have the 30 I could have since I go in spurts and pick up pretty often. Since I currently have 237 items checked out I have to cull more and do some returns before I should request more. I wrote about my library addiction here. Oh and now that Mary G. has moved into this library system if there is only one of a particular title mentioned on 4 Real I have to be a lot faster to request it!

My library really holds out on me! I am so jealous of your 237 items Mary! lol I can only have out 25 items at a time and can only have TEN on my holds list, including those that are waiting for me to be picked up! ARRGGGG It drives me insane! I think I need to be in a biger city. I'm near Houston, but it's a major drive to get to one of their libraries. Anyway, I only have little ones, but here is what I am waiting on:

We are allowed a certain amount per person. So with nine card holders in the family it can amount to a few. I bleieve my dc are usually the youngest card holders I usually enrol them for a card at around 3mths, however my IRL friend enrols hers about 3 weeks When do yo sign up your dc? whoops don't mean to hijack

I am banned form the library  My last fine was over 50.00, after my dh came to  he took my card
I admit I am terrible about losing movies, and books. We have such a large home library the dc mix them up. Of course I have'nt yet been banned from amazon

I'm not sure about having books on hold. I reserve books all the time and they'll keep them up to a week for me to pick-up.
We can have 50 books per card checked out, but only 3 DVDs per card. That helps to keep my girls from raiding the DVD shelves.

awful library system.. as far as what's available and how fast I can get anything.. typical really for a very small library.. BUT I still love our library.. they do a story time for the kids.. and that lets us be there when the only people in the library are there for story time and our homeschool group even has some shelves of books that are ours.. not the libraries (we have a manual check out, it doesn't go through the library at all) so... we get a few fun things but if I want good books... I buy them.. just think of all the fines I save

We are aloud to request up to 20 books per card and we can check out $500.00 worth of material per card.
I just went today and picked up the last of my holds on weather and wind. I am still waiting for our bowling instruction videos

I stopped by the library just yesterday. I currently have 106 items checked out from two different library systems. 61 of them are books and videos about World War II. (Dh and I are doing our own rabbit trail and watching lots of WWII dvds just for ourselves too!) There are only two more items reserved which haven't come in yet.
Great thread -- especially since I had a large number of items overdue and hadn't realized it until I went online to answer Mary's question. Thankfully, there are no overdue fines in my county's system.
I also seem to have two different copies of the WWII movie "The Great Escape", one on dvd and one on video.  If I'm not careful the librarians will realize that sometimes we homeschooling moms slightly abuse our library privileges.
Oh, and I have to say that I am jealous of you Denver gals and your archdiocesan library. What a great idea!

We have two library systems served by one online catalog. Each of the libraries has its own card and hold system, each of my 3 children and I have a library card in each system and each card can check out 100 books, and twenty books on tape or music CDs. Sounds like a math problem - Whats the maximum number of library books this family can check out at once?
I think right now we have about 15 books on tape, 25 cd's and 175 books. I go to the library about twice a week, so my hold list never gets that long. I'm not sure what is the limit. We just finished a big study of Lewis and Clark and we're slowly gearing up for a big study of the settling of the west and research on making our backyard more attractive to birds. So I'm sure that number will get bigger.
I have to say I love our library system. They have an incredible amount of books, they really listen if you request that they purchase a book, and the librarians are just wonderful.

I've just cleared out all our books from the boat (except for Peter Duck) for the sail to Key West and I 'timed' our schooling to be done with the Greeks right before the move. We could still be doing more with them, for instance, yesterday we talked about Archemides and Pi but officially we are DONE with the Greeks. (I always love the end of a study nearly as much as the beginning!)
Original plan was to move on to the Romans so I picked up a batch of Roman books and brought them home last Friday for planning. But - completely changed my mind over the weekend. I did some heavy thinking and remembered that every summer after we are officially "done" with a school year it is always too hot to want to do anything fun outside and we end up reading the summer away. So I returned my Roman books, deleted all the others in the line up and I'm going to request only Key West books today. Field Trip City, here we come! Saving the Romans for the summer or maybe next year?
So this morning my library is holding one book for me, Wheelock's Latin. By this evening? Who knows!

When we lived in Greenville, SC our little library's circulation stats BOOMED while the Gildersleeves lived there ... I even had my own special area for reserved books since I always had so many on hold (there I could only do 10 at a time, so I got the 3 littles cards and could get up to 40 ). The librarians all hugged me before we moved West -- wishing I would stay and keep their books moving.....

That would be awesome. I shouldn't complain though, our library has a Read Off Your Fine program for children. Every 15 minutes of reading earns a dollar towards your fine....the girls usually don't have too much--and the "fee" doesn't bother them a bit!
Our library was recently ranked 8th best in the nation! I'm currently kind of light....only 39 items out on my card and 5 holds.

I'm a bonafide library snob. I borrow books to *see whether there's interest.* Then I buy them if we like them. I, like Molly, have a large home library ... for kids, anyway. Our adult books consist of How to Homeschool and a few history volumes by David McCullough. I usually parcel out how many books I can get according to my budget. Sometimes I go a little crazy at library sales. But I try my best *not* to use the library. You can barely ever find anything with any religious content in them. And usually, I can't find the specific books I'm looking for and we end up carting twaddle home (until I surreptitiously sneak it back to the library).

We can only have a handful on hold (about 7 or 8, I think. I don't count, I just keep adding until the system says I've reached my max.).
We just picked up Ocean and Earth and ended up buying Rainforest at BookCloseOuts.com. We just picked up Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass on CD too. So now I need to start a new hold list.
