Okay, okay, I know it's not an elaborate siting, but from my kitchen window I've been watching a rabbit in our yard. Some pine tree outside of our fence has rained down pine needles and this rabbit has made a little home in the grass and needles. (I know our grass is a bit long, but not THAT long!) We were gone for the weekend on Monday morning I noticed something that looked like a bunny....my binoculars confirmed that it was. And it's still there.

I confess I don't know ANYTHING about rabbits, except that they are prolific and a nuisance in the garden. And usually they move fast....

So, I'm finding watching this bunny and I'm wondering if it is manifesting odd behavior. The "nest" is in the open...it's in a corner of the yard, but not out of the way. I can see it in plain sight...no bushes or trees around for yards. It's just sitting there almost all day, and then staying close by, moving slowly to get food. The next door neighbor's dog is just chomping at the bit to get at the rabbit, but that hasn't scared it, either.

Could it be hurt? pregnant? Have a nest in the open? I confess I haven't gone in to examine more closely because the rabbit is always there and I don't want to disturb it.

But of course, I will, because the yard needs raking. Can someone point me to some good websites that can help me?

Just call me the Clueless City Girl.......

Okay, I'm bumping this up because I've read a little more about cottontail rabbits (which this is) and I'm wondering if this is odd behavior. Handbook of Nature Study didn't describe anything like this!

My little bunny is back. It comes during the daytime and finds a little spot in the yard. Then he usually sleeps during the day. The spot isn't the same each time, but now it's closer to the house, near the patio, but in the middle of the lawn. My yard has no trees, just lush green lawn (previous owners' credit, not ours) and a fence. The rabbit seems to like the wind and the open areas, rather than the thicket or other areas.

I know rabbits are SOO common, but we're beginners, live in the city, and my son is young, so any kind of wildlife is fascinating to him. And I have to start somewhere!

Yes, and this behavior doesn't fit the description.
