We stopped at our usual park watering hole to see our latest bird visitors. We saw a green heron and the big find was a juvenile yellow crowned night heron. He was very cool! It took a while to identify him because he is considered an accidental siting in Arizona.

I have no idea why he is here! We amateurs are still pattin' ourselves on the back for simply identifying him  . He was almost hawk-like in his steely pose. He was in a high traffic area, on a rock in a waterfall near a foot bridge, but that didn't disturb him. His red eyes were piercing.
Part of the fun of birding for us is figuring out which bird is which. We have a lot of the area birds identified so it is extra fun to have an unusual visitor. With winter coming, we'll be seeing more and more winter friends and now we're hopeful for more "accidentals."

What a pretty bird! GREAT find. NOT that I know anything about birds, well a couple. It's something I'd like to persue though in my spare time.

I'm telling you, Tracy, with the help of MacBeth and the generous birders on the CCM/4Real list/board, we're hooked on birds. Even if we just take a few minutes here and there, it really adds up. When we found this guy, we were literally stopping for 15 minutes before we had another appointment. We're SO glad we stopped to bird!
Kiddingly, I told the children that if anyone quizes them on what they are learning about in their homeschool that they should break into this experience. Sure enough, last night came the question "What are you learning these days?" It was so much fun to watch all the children's faces light up as they talked about this siting. Just saying yellow-crowned night heron is cool. Then explaining the difference between an adult and juvenile is interesting. Needless to say, hearing a 6yo describe an accidental siting was preeeeeeeeeety impressive .

Angie, what is the watering hole like? How big is it? Is there a webcam ?
We saw a Black-crowned night heron the same day we saw the pelicans, but I do not think I had ever seen one around here before...no surprise, since it was amazingly camouflaged.

No webcam yet, but knowing the city of Gilbert, it could be in the works! Freestone Park is rather large and they refer to their water as a "lake" but northeasterners would say large pond  .
I'll give the children your "great sighting" feedback. They'll appreciate it. They were telling the story again at our PE park day yesterday. Us moms got to laughing about prepping our children with "what are you doing in school" answers .
The children and I were a little bummed that we didn't stop off to bird yesterday but a new family was in need of some friendship. People before birds .

Rats. I have learned that we never saw the yellow crowned night heron but the juvenile black crowned night heron which is NOT uncommon around here. I feel like I'm going to birders confession  . The juveniles REALLY look alike...REALLY!
At least I received my western US Sibley book for Christmas .

We are looking for a very easy to use guide to Texas birds, wildlife, and plants. Any suggestions?

This is the Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America. I enjoy the original Sibley as well as the Peterson Field Guides.
Hmmm...I bet there is a broader based guide for birds, wildlife, and plants of TX only. There may even be illustrated children's book on the topic. For example, there are several of these types of books for AZ. Anyone?

Sometimes I'll search at Overstock.com or Amazon.com and combine AZ plus birds, wildlife, etc. and I've found some unique books. You could do the same for TX. Oh, and don't forget to ask your librarian too!
