Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This morning my five year old daughter came out of the powder room looking appalled. In a voice that was something between a shout and a shriek, she announced that a plant was growing in the sink. I came in half heartedly, expecting to find a spinach leaf from last night's dinner resting on the drain. To my surprise, I found instead a pale green bean sprout snaking its way toward the light out of the hole in the back of the sink for catching excess water. Peering into the hole, I noticed that another smaller sprout from a separate bean was right behind it.

About a week ago, I made "Crock Frijoles" from the Saving Dinner Cookbook. While I was cooking, my three year old son "borrowed" a handfull of dry pinto beans to use as "fish." He played merrily in the sink for a while, and I thought nothing of it, but little did I know he was setting up his own hydroponic garden.

Word of the struggling sink bean spread like wild fire this morning and soon all the kids were crowding in the powder room to see it. "Look how if follows the light," my eight year old observed. "Mommy, I planted that!" the three year old squealed joyously. It was an excellent science lesson.

The funny part is that we had a housefull of company yesterday, and there was no trace of the bean at all (it would have been noticed by the countless young ones coming in to wash their hands). The fledgling plant seemed to appear out of nowhere like Jack's beanstalk. By the way, we were out all day today, and when we came home it had doubled in size since this morning. (Needless to say, I hadn't uprooted it and can't wait to see how long it survives!)

Thanks for letting me spout about our sprout!

Perhaps this time next week you'll be regaling us with tales of your visits with the giant!
