Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was preparing some haddock for dinner today, and I recalled the tale an old family friend, a very learned woman, told me once about how the haddock got its name. We were in a restaurant, where she had ordered haddock, and was instead given some other type of fish, and told this tale to show how she knew the fish was surely not haddock, as it did not have the distinctive markings:

Filey Brig
Filey Brig is a long ridge of rocks jutting into the North Sea, associated with folklore concerning the Devil and a dragon. The Devil dropped his hammer into the sea whilst making the ridge, and thus he plunged his hand into the water to retrieve it. When he pulled his hand out, he had not grabbed his hammer but a fish. Shouting out "Ha, Dick" the Haddock got its name. This story is supposed to explain the distinctive markings on all haddocks, as the location where the Devil held the fish.
