I really hesitate to post this, but I'm trying to follow Margaret's advice about reaching out for help from friends instead of retreating into myself like I usually do.
I had a really bad day and I feel myself slipping into depression. For me, this is primarily hormonal---the only time I do not struggle with this is when I'm pregnant---but there are also a lot of externals at work this week. My baby turned 3 AND stopped nursing, my beloved inlaws left after a wonderful 3 month stay, our basement flooded the day they left, it's been raining heavily for 3 days straight, my house is badly cluttered, and we have not had a day of REAL learning around here since before Christmas (though Math and English are still being done).
Tomorrow night we're having two other large Catholic families over for a potluck dinner---17 more kids will be joining our 6---and I really cannot afford to face another dark day of despair. Not to mention the fact that my children deserve so much better.
Will you please offer a prayer for me? I'm struggling to do so myself. Thanks for being here.

Diane, I could write your post so many times!  I know EXACTLY what you're going through. 
I also tend to retreat into myself when this happens - it's just the way we're made I guess. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as we all have different ways of dealing with stress and depression is a form of stress, IMHO.
Can you get away for a nice long walk alone with your thoughts? I know that, personally, a long walk alone with just my dog and my thoughts in the country really does a lot to lift up my spirits, even during those hormonal times. I use this time to let my mind wander and often talk with God. For whatever reason, He seems closer to me when I'm out of doors.
I'll keep you in my prayers and hope that this dark cloud lifts before your company shows up.

God Bless you and yours. When I have had bad days I found some comfort to ask the Blessed Mother to love my dc for me and shield them from this...It is so difficult to go through these times knowing we mothers are the heart of the family. I am so glad you reached out...be ready to accept the graces!

I have been there where you are right now. I'm slowly coming out of it. I don't sleep well at night. When I'm awake, I hold on to my brown scapular. I feel like I'm holding the Blessed Mother's hand. It seems to help a lot. I will be praying for you tonight. I'm so sorry you are going through this. It's the worst feeling in the world. God bless you and your family.
