Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know exactly how you feel. Something that helps me is to just focus on *doing* something -- just little things. Like if I can make myself go put in a load of laundry, and focus not on the piles to be done, but each piece of clothing as it goes in and then shut the door... if I can read my kids even a few pages of a good book... if I can wipe up the sticky juice spot on the table... if I can just go about my day *doing* little things, pretty soon the doing will move me into realizing that I am capable of controlling little pieces of my environment -- if not big ones -- and that usually makes me feel better. And at the least, it gets me through the very bad days, one foot in front of the other.

I'll keep you in my prayers.

Diane, if I could only send you some of our sun, too many rainy days can be (for me at least)

Praying!

Diane - I hope you do not mind me taking your thread to say what a wonderful group of women there are on this forum - with the openness and support for depression. I had my only bout during my last pregnancy - hit for 2 weeks in 2nd trimester - and I did not know what was going on. (I call it my 2 weeks from hell) I thought it was my fault - that I did not have enough faith and trust in God - that I was not making the effort to be more positive- I could not understand why I suddenly had no control and could not think and pray myself into feeling happier. In most of my circles depression is seen as almost a disgrace and not something talked about - I would not tell anyone how awful I felt. It was really the grace of God I got through day by day.

I am praying for you a lot. And I feel so much happier that should it ever hit me again that I have people who would be supportive and have been in a similar situation and could offer advice.

Wow. Y'all are amazing with your prayers (said in my best southern Belgian). Truly. Not only did it stop raining today, I even saw a few glimpses of the sun throughout the day. I just know that was a special gift from Jennifer.

And the weight was lifted from my heart as well---praise God!   Angela, I really loved your advice:

Angel wrote:

Today it worked. I was dreading our big dinner party tonight, all the cooking and cleaning that had to be done when I felt so lousy. But it was really the best thing because it kept me busy all day long, doing the little things, with no time to think about how I felt. And of course, we had the most wonderful visit with our friends, who inspire me so much with their faith-filled lives.

Another thing that helped was my friend coming by with her 6mo baby boy. She and her dh adopted him in Taiwan just before Thanksgiving. He's the most beautiful little angel---imo there's nothing like a sweet baby to lift the spirits. Almost as good as the baby himself---well, maybe even better for me---was watching all of my kids ooh and aah all over him. Even Charlie (who now seems like a giant to me ).

Anyway, all of this to say...thank you, my dear friends. I was really slipping into the dark side yesterday, and I'm absolutely certain that your love and prayers helped to pull me out of it today. I've never had that happen so fast.

I don't know what tomorrow will hold for me, but I am hopeful. And that is a very good feeling. Merci!

God bless you for having the courage to share your struggles with us and trust. I hope you have received true comfort and that you will be reminded when the dark moments come again that there is help available and much empathy and understanding from us fellow moms.

Praying for you, too.

Diane,

Depression is something that can be fixed...for some people it happens just one day out of 100...but for others it is a real brain chemistry thing. It is 110% OK to get medical assistance for this issue. It can really, really help and improve your life.

If you are doing fine, that is so, so wonderful! If the bad days outweigh the good (or you are crying for no reason on OK days), it is time to talk to doctors and see what else might be going on.

One other thing...my cousin lived in Budapest and Amsterdam after growing up in So. Cal. She really suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder. She had to get sunlamps and all that...and the treatment helped. I've been in your part of Europe in the winter. SAD might be part of what's getting you down, and for many people the cure is fairly simple (sit in sunlight, use sunlamps, etc.).

You're normal and God's wonderful, loving daughter. It's OK to seek help if you need it.

Hugs...
