The boys and I were reading One Morning in Maine yesterday, and it got us thinking about all the different things we love about summer. Don't you love how a good picture book does that?
We even started writing down things we didn't want to miss out on this year like toasting marshmallows and chasing fireflies and going tidepooling. Simple things, really, but easy to forget when the days are busy and the weeks fly by.
Anyway, to keep the juices flowing, I decided to make up a basket of books that are, for lack of a better word, "summer-y" I will keep it beside the couch in the family room (our favorite reading spot), especially for those days when it is just too hot to do anything but sit in the AC and read!
One Morning in Maine is a perennial favorite, and I also popped in Summer Story (Brambley Hedge). I will have to peruse our shelves and pull out some others, but I wondered if anyone else would mind sharing some of their favorites too?

Elizabeth Enright's Books: Gone Away Lake, Return to Gone Away. I haven't read it, but Thimble Summer is another appropriate summer read.
And Strawberry Girl by Lois Lenski always makes me think of hot summers.
I read and read in the summer on our visits to Arkansas with my cousins. They had an ample home library and during the day it was just too hot to play outside. So when summer rolls around so many books come to my mind, just because I remember reading them curled up at my cousin's house!

Oh, and The Velvet Room by Zilpha Snyder. That is summer in CA during the Apricot season...it doesn't evoke a beautiful picture of summer (it's hot, sticky, dusty), but the refuge into a nice, cool, Velvet room for reading and alone time is just wonderful imagery and contrast.

Oh, Time of Wonder and Comet's Nine Lives. We read Comet today and made ice cream in zip loc baggies.
Jenn, Arkansas is just as HOT as you remember it! During the day we stay in front of the window unit and read.

We seem to always be drawn to Winnie the Pooh here in the summertime. I think the 100 Acre Woods remind us of summertime and being outside to play and explore. I put a basket of books out for holidays but will start doing one for seasons too! Great idea!
We did get some patriotic books from the library this last week. I wanted to get some books on the flag, DC, Colonial times to help my ds get a better understanding of July 4th. We don't want him to think it is just our dog's b-day.

I do a basket at Christmas too ! Now I am thinking one would be fun to do at Lent and Easter, one in the autumn, another through the long winter months ...
Speaking of the 4th of July, there is a book I am thinking of, I think it is called the Story of the 4th of July or something like that. I have never seen it outside of a catalog but the cover looks bright and fun ...
Oh, and I just remembered another summery book we like, called Marshmallow Kisses by Linda Crotta Brennan.

Oops, that's not a picture book, but it's so easy to
"see" that story.

We're in the middle of Winnie-the-Pooh.
We read this one last November when we rowed Cranberry Thanksgiving:
Clams All Year by Maryann Cocca-Leffler
My kids wanted to hear it over and over. It reminded me of summers at Cape Cod.

I love D'Aulaire's books, and The Star Spangled Banner is perfect...just the text of the song with their unique illustrations.
See it here.

There are a couple of picture books that always seem summery to us -
* The Hidden Forest ( about a kelp forest off Tasmania. We read that this week for our oceans theme. ). By Jeanne Baker
* Where the Forest Meets the sea. Also by Jeanne Baker. About a rainforest.
*Greetings from Sandy Beach by Bob Graham. A summer camping trip at the beach!
* Possum Magic by Mem Fox. It just has a summer feel.
*Two Summers by John Heffernan. Compares two Australian summers - one drought stricken.
* Some books by Alison Lester - Imagine; Magic Beach; Are We There Yet?( A Journey Around Australia)

Marybeth, just this morning I asked my ds (6) to pick a book for our read-aloud time and he pulled The House at Pooh Corner off his shelf!! I just love all the Pooh stories and I agree with you that it is a perfect summertime read.
We also really like:
The Seashore Book by Charlotte Zolotow
Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney
Miss Piggle-Wiggle audio tapes (soo funny)
Frog and Toad audios too
And my dd-(9) and I are slowly (and I mean slowly) working through Little Women, one I wish I had read as a young girl

We just took the audio book of Miss Rumphius out of the library today.
Hope everyone is enjoying their read alouds in the summer heat. Wow!! It is very very humid here outside Chicago.
