Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Found these picture books when looking for something else. Thought you might enjoy them.

The Outside Book of Libraries (Roxie Munro)
Talks about different kinds of libraries across the U.S. Good pictures.

The Library (Sarah Stewart)
You probably all know this one....the story of Elizabeth Brown. Very cute. Nice watercolor pictures.

The Librarian Who Measured the Earth (Kathryn Lasky)
A biography on Eartosthenes. Also ancient Greece and mathematics. Excellent book and great pictures!

The Dewey Decimal System (Allan Fowler)
An easy to read and understand explanation about something we use all the time. I learned a lot myself!

The Library of Alexandria (Kelly Trumble)
This book was amazing!!! Not knowing much about ancient Egypt, Greece, or Rome, I don't know how accurate the book is...I am assuming it is...has anyone else read it? There is amazing history in this picture book and beautiful pictures!! It begins with Alexander the Great and the founding of the city of Alexandria. It cover the history of the Ptolemies fairly well, with a partial family tree in the back. It shows how books were made and collected and discusses the rival library of Pergamum and the codex books being made there. There are chapters on astronomy, geography, mathematics, and medicine, discussing the scholars associated with the Library of Alexandria. It ends with the fate of the library. There are great appendixes (sp?) at the end: a map of the empire of Alexander the Great, a map of the Roman Empire, the Ptolemy family tree, sites in ancient Alexandria, a nice glossary and index. It is a very well done book. It is meaty for a picture book, but my kindergartner sat through it.

I just checked out a bunch of books about the library-there was a list in one of the homeschool magazines. These were the ones we enjoyed:
Aunt Chip and the Great Triple Creek Dam Affair by Patricia Polacco

Tomas and the Library Lady by Pat Mora

Check it Out! The Book About Libraries by Gail Gibbons-"kinda boring" per the 5 yr. old, but informative.

The Inside Outside Book of Libraries by Roxie Munro-this one is EXCELLENT! On my to-buy list. Great illustrations about libraries all over the US- from the Library of Congress to the one-room Ocracoke Library off the coast of NC; a library for the blind, a library on the USS Abraham Lincoln, a prison library, a tool lending library, and yes, even home libraries. A great book!!

The library dragon-by Carmen Deedy

Library Lil by Suzanne Williams- Lil refers to the TV as the "Devil's Invention" and converts a rough motocycle gang into readers-I wasn't too sure about it but my girls love it!

Beverly Billingsly Borrows a Book by Alexander Stadler-a little mouse girl get her very own library card and then has anxiety about an overdue book.

Erica and Jennifer,

I printed off your book suggestions. Thank you for the great resources. We have been reading about DC and the Library of Congress so our interest in different libraries is very peaked at the moment.

Thanks for the great suggestions. Can't wait to check them out!

Just a few days after reading this message, we were at the library, and my 5yo brought this book to me to ask if we could check it out. I had never heard of it before reading this thread. What a coincidence. One of the great thing about sharing books online is how I now have great "suggested book lists" stored somewhere in my memory banks. These kind of suggestions have come in handy again and again.

Oh, and I had only come across The Library by Sarah Stewart shortly before reading this thread too. I love the descriptions of the book-crazy main character!

Altho not a "picture book" (about 64 pages long), Down Cut Shin Creek: The Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky is a GREAT book about the traveling librarians duirng the depression ... it's a quick read-aloud but the rabbit trails from it are amazing!

The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians

I found this one at the library this weekend... it could have also been called "the boy who was raised by a homeschooling mom"

I appreciated the "love to learn" humor. My kids liked this story of Melvin, a boy who loves to learn- the library is his favorite place. I especially appreciated the sweet (and fitting) ending

She'll be Coming Round the Mountain by Ashley Wolff is another good one about a traveling
librarian and bookmobile. Love the illustrations!

My kids love the Dr. Seuss quality of Wild About Books, a crazy rhyming story of a librarian who drives her bookmobile into the zoo by accident and finally has all the animals reading and being "wild about books"! Cute, fun, and crazy!

Oh, thanks for bumping the thread. Mary G. mentioned earlier the other book on pack horse librarians of Kentucky. That book is for a bit older student. But a great younger picture book is That Book Woman (Heather Henson). It is also about the Pack Horse Librarians of the Appalachian area, started by the WPA in the 1930s. About one of the traveling librarians and a boy who can't read and doesn't want to learn at first. Great story!

Same author also has a book called Angel Coming about the Frontier Nursing Service founded by Mary Breckinridge. Same time period and also located in Kentucky. Another piece of history I did not know - love to learn about history this way.

My kids enjoyed My Librarian is a Camel. It was recommended by our librarian who is most definitely not a camel!

Don't forget Curious George Visits the Library! It's my DD's favorite book currently.

We're trying to work on library manners - any books on that?

I second the recommendation of That Book Woman. It is a wonderful book with lovely illustrations.

It's for a younger set but the book "The Knight and the Dragon" by Tomie de Paola features a librarian who saves the day by diverting the dragon and the knight from fighting to cooking.

My kids' favorite (little boys right now, big into picture books) is Library Mouse by Daniel Kirk. They ask for me to read and reread it.

Biblioburro: A True Story from Columbia (Jeanette Winter) - based on the life of a man in Columbia who took books by burro to the remote Columbian villages.

Another great one was just published! (and can you BELIEVE our small-town-Idaho-library HAS it???!)

The Book Boat's In by Cynthia Cotten, illustrated by Frane Lessac.

It's a beautiful book!

"...based on the 1800s book boat that traveled along the Erie Canal."

Of course, LOVE the folk-art-stye illustrations and the importance of hard work and perseverance!

Adding an OOP title Don and the Book Bus by Helen D Olds. Our children love this book and it is one of the first that they read independently. Not quite a picture book, (68 pages) though it does have some beautiful colour illustrations throughout. Obviously this is another about a bookmobile.
