Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know its halfway through the month but does anyone have any craft ideas for the sacred heart? I have tons of cards I have saved for such a thing but I have no ideas.

Lisa,

I am not that art and crafty but I will tell you about something I made (if your children are older they could make this no trouble) and then put it to good use.

I made a Sacred & Immaculate Heart head piece for my oldest daughter's First Holy Communion veil, and it cost all up 80c for the shoulder pads I bought - the rest was from my original wedding hair piece and scrap wedding material (the Communion dress was re-designed and altered from my Wedding dress). If you still had daughters going to making their First Communion in the future you could put this activity to good, practical use - it can become a family heirloom!

If you were to go to a fabric/wedding shop you could probably ask for some off cuttings if you told them your purpose, as you don’t need much material. At a craft shop you could get the beading, wires etc. It was all hand sewn so no sewing-machine skills are needed here!

Here is a listing of what I used for each part:
To give the hearts their shape - shoulder pads, cut and shaved to shape
The material covering hearts - wedding material off-cut
The flames - wedding hems twisted into 'loops' and leaf beading plus 'sprays' of beads coming out of it.
The flowers on the Immaculate Heart - beading flower patterned material
The crown of thorns on the Sacred Heart - wired beading
The wounds, blood drops, sword - all different beads
You then sew a hair comb to the back of it if you were to use it for a veil.
I think that is it - this of course incorporates the two feasts together - Sacred and Immaculate Heart feasts.

Lisa, one idea I hope to do before month's end is a Holy Water font as described by Alice in this post at her blog.

In the post she mentions a beautiful Sacred Heart variation. I found the plain font at AC Moore last weekend, and now just need to assemble some red embellishments!

Hope that helps!

CHC has a simple drawing activity on their website under "free curriculum", "Cathlic how to draw" about drawing the Sacred Heart. Ds did this last year and enjoyed it.

Alice had a lovely idea of creating magnets from last year's thread. You could use your leftover cards!

WE are using Seton's Art 3 directions for making a Sacred Heart of Jesus Statue and Art 1 for making a baptismal shell to hang on the wall.

Here are some beautiful inscriptions written under two very unusual, unique pictures we have of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts. (I have never seen these particular images anywhere else before) You may like them and have the children do lovely copy-work or calligraphy with them.

Under the Sacred Heart: (these words have been placed in a drawn scroll surrounded by ivy)

The Heart that is never strange or cold,
The Love that is ever new and old.

Under the Immaculate Heart: (these are also in a scroll surrounded by forget-me-nots)

How tender thy love for the human race,
Thy motherly heart in the fullness of grace.
