Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I want to do The Merchant of Venice with my older kids this year and I was hoping there was a decent movie adaptation.

Can anyone recommend a movie??

Tough one Jodie. I have not seen one in a while. I know that the latest version (2004?) is R rated - I have not seen it but it looks a little sketchy. The BBC Shakespeare one (1980) with John Rys-Davies - is probably better - though I think there might be some uncomfortable anti-semitism - cannot remember why but did not really like it. I think your best bet is the 1972 version with Maggie Smith - if you can find it. Cannot remember much but I think it is likely to be better than the others.

We watched the BBC version over the summer and I thought it was well done. I thought they handled Shylock well - he wasn't a buffoon and they didn't try to over emphasize his Jewish-ness, but they still showed the anti-semetic aspects of the play. We had some good conversations about conversions and what God wants.
