I'd like to introduce some of the early American saints, but I can't decide what to order. Does anyone have any experience with these:

We have the 1st, 2nd and 4th books. My children's favorite is Blessed Kateri and the Cross in the Forest by Anne E. Neuberger. It is a picture book that is fairly well done and definitely interesting.

When you say "American", do you mean North American??? If you're including all the Americas, there're a bunch more saints to consider!

Kelly, I'm including all the Americas, but only during the 1600's for now. The other American saints I found were all later. Do you know of some from that time period that I am missing?

Also, there were many, many martyrs for the Faith in the Florida missions. If you're interested, I can post some book titles with information. There are a number in Florida and in Georgia whoses causes for beatification are currently being investigated.

Pauline Media has a new book called Holy Friends: Thirty Saints and Blesseds of the Americas.

In addition to the No. Amer. martyrs and Bl. Kateri I found 2 Canadian saints for your time period. Bl. Marie of the Incarnation Guyard 1599-1672 and Bl. Francois de Laval, 1623-1708. I think Bishop Laval of Quebec is the bishop in Willa Cather's book Shadows on the Rock, about the Catholic settlement in Quebec (fantastic book!). He died penniless as he gave everything to the poor.

Bl. Marie founded an Ursiline convent in Quebec. She could speak, read and write Iroquois, Montagnais, Algonquin and Ouendat. She authored an Algonquin catechism.

The book is arranged by country and chronologically and the illustrations are beautiful.

This is a wonderful book, I think of it often (the mark of a great book!)

Also, there is an inexpensive booklet called "Heroes of Virtue" by Sister Elizabeth Ann, SIster of St. Joseph the Worker, which is a "timeline manual of New World Saints and Blesseds" It's not eye-catching, but it's very helpful and interesting.

My library has "Holy Friends" and I just put it on hold. I'll look for the other book. This week is the Huge Book Sale!

We studied early explorers last fall and used these two Vision Books as read alouds. Everyone really enjoyed them.

We did a unit on the Jesuits last year, and another on Contact Era/Colonial Era history, which had some overlap. I used the "Heroes of Virtue" book a lot for our study of the Jesuits.

Janette, thanks! That's what I was wondering. My kids are 8 and under and I wasn't sure how difficult these would be.
