I'm really wanting to use the notebooking and lapbooking ideas in our lessons. There is sooo much info and products available my mind is just spinning. So many neat things. I have wanted to do this for about three years but can not bring myself to start doing this. I've been trying to do this without spending money, but I'm not very creative and I'm a busy mom with other things that need to get done. But I'm now thinking about getting the History Through the Ages. http://www.homeschoolinthewoods.com/HTTA/timeline.htm
I have 7 children (due again with #8 this fall) and I think I'm to the place I need to just get practical. Having something on hand ready to use for the kids well, we might actually start notebooking and lapbooking.

I know there are other ones out there. If there are any other recomendations I would love to know. I was thinking about this set because it would carry over to all subjects.

I have the Homeschool in the Woods Timeline Book and it really is beautiful-well worth the pricetag. But we don't use any of their other products-too cut and paste for us.
However, if I were going to start all over again, I would get these.
History Portfolio Series
It seems to be just the right balance between guidance and flexibility, with room for creativity. I only wish I had seen them first, because we are doing a very similar thing with our timeline book, but just having to make our own text boxes and image boxes, etc. The pre-made layouts seem great to me, making them a combination timeline and history notebook. We would definitely be using them if we were not already so invested in the timeline book we have.
Sorry to throw another product on the pile, but I just find this one really interesting.

I had actually considered these too. I was thinking about saving them for Juinor high or high school years. I dont exactly follow a four year cycle of history but I am hoping to have each child make it through at least twice. Since these are spendy I thought I would use these when the kids are older and can do a little higher quality of work. Thanks for your input.

Has anyone seen the resource list. Does it include Catholic books or is it evangelical only? If I used it, would I have to be cautious once I got past ancient?
Has anyone used it with a high schooler?
It appears that we may be totally revamping our approach to history. The dc just don't seem to retain and learn from textbooks - even good ones. We seemed to learn most when we had a pile of books and watched the dc go off on projects. I just had trouble making sure we had documentation and some sort of means of getting the overall picture. This might really fit the bill and work in combination with some of the Kolbe reads and paper topics. It follows the sequence I really wanted.
Are there any users that can give me more info. I went to the sight and really am impressed. I just really need to be careful and budget well this year.

Are you refering to the History Through the Ages or the Portfolio. I'm pretty sure that HTTA is protestant I did not see any Catholic figures, one of the reasons I am hesitating getting them. I would think that the History Portfolio would not matter as much since you have your own readings and events, ect that you are entering into the portfolio. Having not used either one though someone else may be able to better answer. I wonder what RCHistory recommends for timeline figures.

If it is just timeline figures you are after, you should check out this site.UT Portrait gallery
It has portraits of hundreds of historical figures, arranged alphabetically for easy searching, that you could just print up and put into a timeline for free (I like free!). It is what we often use to get a picture of about anyone.

I was looking at the History Portfolio series - thinking the highschooler could use the framework and fit in more demanding reads from Kolbe while my 4th and 6th graders did it more as recommended. I have never done a lapbook or otherwise with dc. This kind of stuff was part of my initial vision but my oldest really resisted this kind of stuff and begged for structure so we drifted into more textbooks and traditional stuff with all. My to be 9th, 6th and 4th graders seem to be strongly project oriented (with a mom who is a sequence freak and very resistant to projects personally). With our initial foray into less traditional type learning we just drifted into chaos. I've been lurking on the unschooling thread and dh (always as sign to me of where we should be headed) made a comment about something he read in his engineering magazines about an experiment at a college where it was project directed and felt like that was how our remaining children really need to learn. It was a breath of fresh air as it looks like our initial vision has returned - and I see the possibilities of having more time to enjoy the children because we'll be doing stuff together. I just know myself - I need something that feels organized already so I don't have to keep planning all year round (tweaking, of course and even revising in a major way does happen and is OK - I just cannot plan to re-plan each week or month or quarter or we become overwhelmed and revert to workbooks in desperation).
I'm really hoping there is someone who has used this so I have a better idea of how it all works and how Catholic friendly it really is. Is there space for early martyrs and church fathers? Are there any Catholic books on the recommended list (seems like probably not just because most of this kind of stuff is Protestant). Would it work with the history recommendations of Materabilis? I don't want to use a text I have to spend time explaining or countering as my dc often read and leave me in the dust. I have a request for the World's Story but who knows if it will become available for me to be able to use it or not - and I think all my next dc are particularly textbook resistant in history. Anyways, I am at the brainstorming mode of planning for next year and am looking at all the ideas and questions on this board.
Oh, thanks for the links to the pictures. It is great to have free pics. I wish there were more Catholic religous figures to add but I think I can find pictures of Saints fairly easily. This should help.
