We celebrate the Feast of the Ascension here in Germany. My dh and oldest dd and I will watch the new movie on Fatima (from Ignatius Press) over the weekend. I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know if it is something younger children would understand.
I will try to follow the Pope in Portugal through the internet. I am sure he will have something very worth reading or listening to.

Robin, usually EWTN covers such things. I get live streaming of EWTN through the internet. Otherwise the Catholic News agencies like Zenit usually publish the Pope's messages timely.

Below is a list of ideas I typed up for celebrating the Optional Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima at home. Perhaps some these ideas will work for you.
Optional Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima
May 13
Explanation and Resources:
* The appearance of the Blessed Mother to three shepherd children in Portugal in 1917 is one of nine apparitions of our Lady approved by the Church.
* One of my favorite web sites for information on the Apparitions of Our Lady is www.marypages.com/mainframeEnglish.html The site has lots of great links. The section on Our Lady of Fatima gives good information along with some interesting photos and links to videos.
* My favorite source for reading the stories of the apparitions to children is the book, Journeys with Mary, Apparitions of Our Lady by Zerlina De Santis. I purchased the book at Leaflet Missal (www.leafletonline.com) for about $6. It is not a picture book but it does tell the story of each of the 9 approved apparitions of Mary in a way children can understand.
* Catholic Culture has a special Our Lady of Fatima section which can be viewed at: www.catholicculture.org/culture/liturgi calyear/overviews/fea sts/fatima/fatimahome.cfm
Decorations:
* The liturgical color for Marian Feast Days is white. Use a white cloth on your table or home altar or use white place mats or napkins.
* For a centerpiece or in a prominent location, use a blue or white candle or candles. You could also use a white pillar candle with a blue ribbon tied around it.
* Set out a holy card or small figurine of Our Lady of Fatima.
* The lovely smell of hyacinths is a nice addition to the home on a Marian feast day. Consider placing either a blue or white potted hyacinth out where it can be enjoyed.
Activities:
* Locate Portugal on a map.
* A coloring page of Our Lady of Fatima can be found at: www.home.comcast.net/~sborders/coloring saints/index_files/ho me.html
* A different coloring page can be found at: www.sjtbre.org/docs/Our%20Lady%20of%20Fatima.pdf
* Make an Our Lady of Fatima grotto. Illuminated Ink has a lovely Our Lady of Fatima Marian grotto kit that can be purchased at www.illuminatedink.com/products/4/12/96/ or from Leaflet Missal in St. Paul. You can also make your own by using a holy card or other image of Our Lady of Fatima. Place the image either in a box or glue it onto a piece of cardboard. Let the children decorate the inside, outside, and edges of the box or the edges around the piece of cardboard with artificial flowers, jewels, pom-poms or whatever crafts you have handy. My kids like to use popsicle sticks to make houses around the grottos.
Food:
* Blueberry muffins for breakfast or snack might be fun - blue and white being the colors associated with Mary. You could also do blueberries with pancakes or waffles.
* Also, check the Catholic Cuisine website as the time for the feast day approaches. They always have great ideas. www.catholiccuisine.blogspot.com
Hope this helps. I also have a similar list of ideas for celebrating the Ascension if you would like that in addition.

I was going to mention that. Definitely the Solemnity of Ascension, if celebrated on Thursday, will suppress the celebration in the liturgy of Our Lady of Fatima. That isn't to say you can't honor Our Lady in your home, but Ascension should take precedence.
It's the first time I consider it a perk that it's moved to a Sunday here.

In the USA only the ecclesiastical provinces of ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, Philadelphia, and the state of Nebraska will be celebrating it on Thursday. The rest of the US will be on Sunday.

Thanks for the ideas for tomorrow. Some nice ideas, and I'll be taking some muffins and a hyacinth to my mil.
In Detroit diocese, the Feast of the Ascension has been the following Sunday for a few years, now. My fil passed away on Thursday, 1 June 2000, which was the feast back then, before it was moved. We all found it very comforting that he passed on that feast.
God Bless,
Stacy in MI
