Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Rox,

There was this good thread several years back: saints in the garden that might be a beginning.

Not a saint, but Gregor Mendel: The Friar Who Grew Peas would be good.

I think I remember a few other books depicting saints; I'll be back when I think of them.

Roxie,

I love your questions...the ideas are endless. I was pondering about saints and animals. First of all, the patronages are quite a bit. And there are legends of unique relationships with animals and birds and fish. But then there are the everyday stories that doesn't have a special relationship, but illustrates the saint living out their vocation.

One that comes to mind is the role of a shepherd. We have so many saints that were shepherds at one time. St. Germaine Cousin, St. Joan of Arc, Jacinta, Lucia, and Francisco from Fatima...those are just a few that came to mind. St. Isidore the Farmer whose feast was the 15th (one of my favorites) must have dealt with oxen and other animals on a daily basis. I didn't delve into the flora connection with saints, although I know there are quite a few. Here's my first list that comes to mind, some of the unique relationships with animals, not the husbandry associated with them.; most are picture books.

I have marked a few books with a (?) because I have not seen these, so don't know what perspective they are written (i.e., more secular; or putting saints on a natural level, deemphasizing God and Catholic faith; or elevating animals; or making the animal/person relationship mystical or magical).

Collected Stories:

:: Saints Among the Animals by Cynthia Zarin (?)

::Saints Among the Animals by Margaret Ward Cole from 1905. (?) I can't seem to track down any copy. The above book is supposed to be inspired by this original.

::Brother Wolf, Sister Sparrow: Stories About Saints and Animals by Eric Kimmel

::Beasts And Saints by Helen Waddell (?)

::Book of Saints and Friendly Beasts by Abbie Farwell Brown. This is OOP, can be read online at Baldwin Project or Google Books.
(**NOTE** While the Baldwin Project is not a Waldorf site, it does contain some Waldorf books. The main purpose of the site is to put books that are out of the copyright domain so that they are accessible to everyone. A few books do have a Waldorf bent, however "Book of Saints and Friendly Beasts" does not fall into this category.)

Books marked with an asterisk (*) are books included in Catholic Mosaic by Cay Gibson

Individual Saint Stories

St. Jerome and the Lion:
::St. Jerome and the Lion* by Margaret Hodges

::St. Jerome and the Lion by Rumer Godden (This is our favorite.)

::St. Jerome and the Lion Coloring Book from Neumann Press

::Brother Jerome and the Lion by Terry Reid (?)

St. Tekla of Ethiopa (or Takla), Ethiopian Orthodox Church saint, not connected to Rome and the Pope
::A Saint and His Lion: The Story of Tekla of Ethiopia* by Elaine Murray Stone

St. Francis of Assisi
From the Little Flowers of St. Francis we know of the stories of the Wolf of Gubbio, St. Francis and the Birds, and there is also the legend of the donkey?

::St. Francis and the Animals by Leo Politi (OOP) (?)

::Song of Francis and the Animals by Pat Mora

::Saint Francis and the Wolf by Richard Egielski

::St. Francis & the Wolf by Jane Langton

::The Wolf of Gubbio by Michael Bedard

:: Brother Wolf of Gubbio: A Saint Francis Legend by Colony Elliott Santangelo

::Saint Francis and the Christmas Donkey by Robert Byrd (OOP)

::The Song of Francis By Tomie dePaola

::St. Francis and the Proud Crow

St. Martin de Porres
::Pied Piper of Peru* by Ann Tompert

St. Kevin of Ireland
::The Blackbird's Nest* by Jenny Schroedel

Saints and the Friendly Beasts Series:

From Neumann Press. Saints and Friendly Beasts Series of books by Eva K. Betz. (Imprimatur 1961 and 1964)

Blessed Sebastian and the Oxen

St. Martin de Porres and the Mice

St. Colum and the Crane,

St. Brigid and the Cows

St. Germaine and the Sheep.
