Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our local homeschooling group is having a gathering for All Saints Day on Nov. 1st. We are each supposed to pick a saint and do an activity/craft associated with that saint. Since the 3rd is St. Martin's feast day, I thought it would be fun to make lanterns and to educate the kids on St. Martin so they can have fun on the 3rd! I have about 30 kids, ranging in age, to make lanterns. I want to keep it simple since there will be lots of activities that day. Any suggestions for "easy" lanterns? I was thinking, I have quite a few old canning jars we could use for the lantern part. Then maybe take a jar rim and tie a string to it so it can hang and maybe use cellophane(?) (that plastic tissue paper type stuff) to gather around the outside and tie to make the light appear colored. I don't know how it would look. Maybe the older kids could cut shpes out of the cellophane and glue(?) it on for a stained glass window look? I was also thinking about getting a bunch of those battery operated tea lights for safety's sake to put in the jars. Any thoughts or better ideas? I'm all ears! Thanks so much!

What a fun idea. Just to clarify though - the feast of St. Martin de Porres is on Nov. 3. He is not the saint associated with Martinmas lanterns. The feast for which lanterns are associated is Martin of Tours whose feast day is Nov. 11 ( so still in the month of November).

There are many different variations possible for fun Martinmas lanterns. Another way to get the stained glass effect is to glue on pieces of tissue paper. Cellophane does not adhere as well as tissue.

This is a past thread on making lanterns. There are several links to member's blogs with photos of finished products.

lanterns?
