Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Since its Mozart's 250th anniversary of his birth and we are into January already, we'll do Mozart this month.

You all have Mozart CD's lurking around, undoubtedly. Dig them out, blow the dust off them and play them!! Later today, I'll try to offer a brief commentary on Mozart's music. (I don't claim to be an expert)

For the upcoming months I'm going to suggest a CD(S) and hopefully you can order, find them at libraries, or find similar suggestions at your local stores or download them for a fee on itunes (always proceed cautiously when you download something-know where the mute button is on your computer in case its not what you thought it was going to be and you have your kids in the room-like what happened to me yesterday )

Mozart

The Mozart Project

itunes

When I get a chance here, I'll list the next two/three months so you can prepare yourself with the materials.

Coincidentally, when I asked my husband to pick a new symphony for us to listen to for the next couple of weeks, he chose Mozart's 40th. He stopped to chat with the girls about it for a few minutes, and later my 10yo wrote a blog entry about it. Short & sweet—

"This morning at breakfast, Mommy had Daddy put a piece of music on for us to listen to. She then had Daddy tell us a little bit about the piece and the writer. Turns out the piece was by Mozart. It is his fortieth symphony. Mozart started writing symphonies when he was five or six. Mozart mostly wrote music when someone came in and said, "Can you write me a string quartet?" or something like that. However, at one point, he wrote three symphonies for no real reason. It only took him six weeks to write all three! Also, those three were probably some of his best symphonies ever."

I was amused.

I just got a post card in the mail from the NY Philharmonic. Not only are they playing plenty of Mozart, but they are also having free lectures on Mozart by Neal Zaslaw. I'm sure, this being the 250th anniversary, there will be opportunities to see Mozart performed all around the US. Don't forget to check the PR office of your local orchestra, music school, or festival.

Special events in NY include:

Lorin Maazel opens our Magic of Mozart Festival with a pair of Mozart symphonies and the "Coronation" Mass. January 26-28.

Feb. 1 brings "Inside the Music" with Peter Schikele (PDQ Bach) to the stage for Mozart piano concerti 17 and 21. These short programs are informative and fun.

Almost. Libby's orchestra (not Juilliard, but another one) was invited, but did not get enough kids to commit. The kicker is that this is Libby's last year of German, and she is the only one in her class who has never been to a German speaking country. Double .

We lived an hour south of Vienna and went up occasionally -- but not often enough . We also made a few trips to Salzburg and the area surrounding as well as Innsbruck.

God willing, we'll be going back next Fall (for dh to pursue a PhD in Bioethics) so we'll be able to tag onto some of this celebration! If we go, MacBeth, we can always have Libby stay with us -- we're in the same village that FUS and AveMaria have their abroad programs.....

Interesting tidbit: Bruno Nettl (professor of music and anthropology emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a founder and past president of the Society for Ethnomusicology) muses about Mozart being the "sweet" composer. He talks about how there are sweets (Mozartkugeln, Mozartkrapfen) and sweetshops named after Mozart, but not other composers, except for Schubert who has his own Krapfen.

Mozart is the sweet composer, there are sweets, sweet liqueurs, sweet wines, at least four sweetshops in North America, desserts in Viennese cookbooks, all named for him. None for Beethoven; all I could find was a meat-and-potatoes restaurant on the coast, and a piano moving company in New York. (snip)
The idea of the composer who writes easily, doesn't have to try, for whom problems are solved, as it were, by divine inspiration, in whose music each phrase seems the only logical successor to the one you've just heard, all this correlates with the idea of sweets, which go down easily and represent for us a certain seamlessness. For Mozart we are sometimes inclined to think, composing was easy as pie, or a piece of cake. - from Aesthetics: The Big Questions

Why is Mozart a composer of "sweet" music? It is sweets, and particularly chocolate, that "go down easily", provide no obstacles. Perhaps most among the music of the great masters, Mozart's gives the impression of ease, flowing naturally, moving without obstacle. - from Disciplining Music: Musicology and Its Canons

Here's a company that sells Mozart chocolates:

I am so excited! I signed us up to attend a performance of The Magic Flute this month and now this composer study! This is great! I was emailed a packet of Lesson Plans for this opera and would be happy to send them to anyone who wants them. I put it in a Word document and it is now about an 8 page document that has a book list, teacher's guide, list of characters, synopsis, biography, list of instruments of the orchestra, a nice vocabulary list, and a word search.

I just requested some of the books from the library, so I don't know if they are good or not, but here are a few that I don't think have been mentioned. Some have to do specifically with the Magic Flute or operas/orchestras.

The Magic Flute (Anne Gatti)
Sing Me a Story (Jane Rosenburg and Luciano Pavarotti)
The Young Person's Guide to the Opera (Anita Ganeri)
Bravo! Bravo! A Night at the Opera: Behind the Scenes with Composers, Cast and Crew (Anne Siberelli)
Who Was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Yona Zeldis McDonough)
Mozart Finds a Melody (Stephen Costanza)

The candy/chocolate looks great! How fun!

Erica,

There's a beautiful one we just picked up from the library -- The Magic of Mozart: Mozart, the Magic Flute and the Salzburg Marionettes -- it's a real beaut! It talks about Mozart's life, the story behind The Magic Flute, and pictures of the Salzburg Marionettes -- the book shows photos of the marionettes "doing" the Magic Flute. This is a clasic Salzburg touristy thing to do -- but it cost too much for us to see the marionettes in person....

A little tangent, but all these talks about Salzburg reminds me that the Trapp Family's original house was in Salzburg. In the summer are the wonderful Salzburg Festivals. In her book Story of the Trapp Family Singers she talks about her naivete of her first year in marriage and staying in Salzburg for the Festivals, see "A Festival Summer and a Baby." And the later chapter it's during the Festivals that they are "discovered."

Her Family on Wheels has a chapter "Salzburg: 1950" when the family returns to Salzburg, a bittersweet return. Very beautiful.

Although this little tidbit doesn't relate directly to Mozart, but indirectly. Because of his place of birth and his musical influence that has lasted for generations, this shows it resulting in the birth of another famous musical family.

I just had a brain wave -- we were reading Life in the Middle Ages: Castleby Kathryn Hinds. She has a recipe for marzipan. What if we made the marzipan next Wednesday, and then rolled them and dipped them in semi-sweet chocolate -- voila! Mozartkugeln in time to celebrat Woferl's birthday!

If anyone wants the recipe -- I've got it as a word doc.

Just finished reading The Facts and Fictions of Minna PrattThe Facts and Fictions of Minna Pratt by Patricia Maclachan. The children in the story are preparing for a competition:they are to play K.157.
In search of the music to download now.

Enjoyed the book.
