For the "romantic" month  we'll study a Romantic Composer.
Peter Tchaikovsy (1840-1893)
The four pieces:
Swan Lake (excerpts)
Sleeping Beauty (excerpts)
1812 Overture (kids love those cannons @ the end )
Piano Concerto No. 1
While most people think of the Nutcracker, he has many other beautiful works. We'll discuss more in February but I wanted you to plan ahead to get your materials.
Collect your CD's now from whatever source you choose- the library might be an option.
NOTE: don't get too uptight whether you have the right CD or not, the point is to listen to something by this compose, whether its the suggested pieces above or others)

For those near Washington DC, heard about this ballet performances at the Kenedy Center:
Swan Lake, Jan. 17-22
There's Sleeping Beauty in June, too. I know it doesn't hit February....

My goodness gracious I needed this suggestion. Ever since my dd was in her first Nutcracker ballet this past December, we have listened to Nutcracker music ad nauseum. I couldn't bring myself to say no to a youngster's request for Tchaikovsy, but this may be the perfect way to get away from the same old CD. I know it seems a simple idea, but one of which I had not thought.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but just in case...I'll make another plug for the DK Illustrated Ballet Classics book, which includes the Swan Lake/ Sleeping Beauty stories AND a cd telling the story along with exerpts from the ballets (I *think* it includes Sleeping Beauty, but I'm sure it has Swan Lake). My children really like this cd and book---maybe it would help ease the transition from Nutcracker to other Tchaikovsky ballets, Victoria 
Also, the cd "Beethoven's Wig I" has the 1812 Overture, set to words (as well as a wordless rendition) which is pretty entertaining.

The exact title is "DK Read & Listen: Illustrated Book of Ballet Stories" ISBN 0789460971. It's listed on amazon.com for $9.99 and I think I've seen it at B&N on a regular basis. I noticed that it *does* have "Sleeping Beauty" on it, as well as "Swan Lake" (AND Nutcracker!!!).
Also, there's the Classical Kids cd "Tchaikovsky Comes to America" for further background on the composer.

You know, this is kind of a stretch, but I seem to recall that a few of The Gang on line here are studying China, now, too. It might be a fun tie-in with Tchaikovsky that probably THE most famous Odette/Odile to dance "Swan Lake" was Margot Fonteyn, who spent her childhood...in China! I believe she lived in Shanghai.
Also, at the time of Tchaikovsky's life, another interesting rabbit trail was taht Russia and England were head to head rivals for control of Central Asia. It was the time of the so-called "Great Game", this period of military and political wheeling & dealing that took place between the two countries that was almost a secret war, also involving the Central Asian Muslims---in the form of the various khans--- who held sway in the area.
Like I say, it's a stretch, but it could be interesting. It's definitely fun pulling various subjects together!

Has anyone seen this Matthew Bourne production? Is this appropriate for a 10 year old? Why do they have to make it "sexy?"

Mary....we were part of the unfortunate group of highschool students who attended a "sexy" version of an opera (can't recall the name but it is very well known) on Student Dress Rehearsal night  . Let me just say that the director went beyond anything I'd have thought of for a public performance in front of students, so I'd just skip it rather than end up getting mad. I'll keep my eyes open for the student performances of opera and symphony and try to get us a field trip soon (might have to be next fall  ).

Here are a few coloring books: there's Sleeping Beauty and the Nutcracker Ballets and a Coloring Book of Great Composers. Vol. II has Tchaikovsky.

Oh Mary....you are sooooo fortunate you did not get tickets to this production of Swan Lake (you didn't did you?)
Frankly, Matthew Bourne sounds pretty troubled. I'm sorry for all the innocent families who tried to go to this production.
