Wow, everyone, thanks for your thoughts.
Now, we are and pretty much always have been unschooly. One thing I notice, though, is that this issue of compulsion comes up more with some children than with others.
I have seven sons. Some of these become, almost overnight, planners/do-ers, people who will take on things, new and difficult and push thmeselves out of their comfort zones. Even spiritually. Now, to these ones I can really relate, because I am a big pusher of myself. 
Other sons, however seem to dislike to try new things, need almost to be forcibly made to try something new and difficult - even if it is something they want to try. For them, it appears to be hard to find the inner push to do work before play, to be prepared to try something hard - and, sometimes, when I push, these sons end up liking the new activity. Or at least liking the fact that they tried something and that something took them out of their rut.Sometimes.
So, I am back to Willa's post on my mean mum blog post.

Which makes me think, though it's a side topic -- one of the reasons I like to keep in touch with unschooly thoughts even when we're not totally unschooling is that it's the only "method" that seems to raise questions like that and try to work them out. In one way, it seems obvious -- "of course parents are allowed to/supposed to use some compulsion" -- but it is interesting to try to figure out why -- what IS compulsion? if it does benefit the kid, how? can it be better to avoid doing it in particular circumstances?"
These are very Catholic questions -- not that every parent always has to go through the whole pondering process all the time or even at all, but it's nice that sometimes some of us can think about that type of thing.

Yes, I think why I have had an attraction to unschooling. It is because it make me think - to act and not react, as the maxim goes. That is also how I ended up converting to Catholicism..that thinking and not doing just what had always been done, that questioning...
Funny how this topic of compulsion comes up for me, again and again..

Catherine, May I please quote you? The theme of joy has always been special to me. I know there was another thread discussing it which I enjoyed following. I hear my father singing out in church and I see him living his life to the fullest. He practiced what he preached; the joy of life and our faith. Because of him, I always try to search for the joy in things. Although, having been in the arts, I have struggled to define exactly what joy means to me. I never heard it said so succinctly and beautifully as when you stated, “Joy is acquired by the virtue of perseverance; perseverance is acquired by sacrificing joy." Beautiful.

Sunny, of course! I only restate what the author of Hebrews said so beautifully concerning our Lord, "...who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." (Heb. 12:2)
btw, it's Caroline, not Catherine , although I always wanted to be Catherine!
