Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dd has asked if we could have our homeschool be more like "real" school. Dh had brought home a couple text books he found at the dump, and she's asking if we could use textbooks for school this year.

I'm not a big fan of textbooks, but I want to go ahead and work with her here, but I don't much care for the texts dh brought home. I was thinking of just getting some of the books from Seton, without actually doing the whole program. Are their books really dry or are they more living??    And can I get the lesson plans without enrolling?

Thanks!

If you want living without dry ... I think I'd check out CHC as their books are lots of fun workbooks and textbooks that are interesting.

Seton is great for Catholic content in their texts ... their history texts are pretty "alive" as the authors are really into their subjects (particularly the ones about Cahtolics in America).

Emily~
Do you know what aspect of "real school" she is looking for? Are you sure it's textbooks? There are lots of aspects to a brick-and-mortar school that a child could be talking about.

Could it be....
**Assignments pre-determined and written out for her?
**Teacher standing and "instructing"?
**More structure to the day, laid out so she can see it?
**Other kids?
**More seat work?

Do you mean textbooks or workbooks?

Basically what she wants is to see what school is really like--as far as workload goes. She wants to use textbooks, get homework, etc. If money wasn't so tight, I'd enroll her completely in Seton, since that seems to be as close to a "real" school workload. She's always wanted to go to school, and feels that she's missing out, despite the fact that all her friends who go to public school assure her that she's really lucky that she gets to stay home.

I've promised her that if she still wants to go to public school in a few years, she can go to the local high school, so now she is anxious to "prepare."

We've been using workbooks from CHC for a couple years, and I'll probably continue with their spelling and grammar for now since she does well with them, but as far as history, science and religion go, she wants textbooks.

Are there any good textbooks you could recommend?

So she wants hardback, non-consumable textbooks? For secular books, you could try your local library sale. Around here we have one every three months or so. We pick up lots of old treasures there. My kids really enjoy the "California State Series" books. Finding them can be hit and miss, but if you do you may be able to satisfy her desire for "real" school by incorporating them into her day.

If she isn't adverse to using workbooks, Seton's are very textbook-y (new word!). They have great 4th grade science, history, and religion workbooks.
