Gee I really need a "Pretty Makeover", I live on a building site and I confess to it not bothering me too much. I may be a hopeless case, no pretties in my life (except dh and dc  ), everything utilitarian.

Oh Erin, I know your pain, sister   .
One of the best parts of being so practical and all about function forever, is that NOW I'm having a blast doing all sorts of pretty things that I just didn't do before. My latest is perfume...which reminds me that I need to update that topic  .

in some ways that might be easier to add just a small thing Erin.. a small vase/glass of flowers in the kitchen windowsill for instance would stand out in a utilitarian room more than in one that has lots of pretties already.
Stef, I'm not sure from your post.. do unscented candles bother you? or all candles? You might try the cleaner burning candles like beeswax or soy.. unscented of course. Or they make those little electic LED tea light candles.. those go inside containers so you can get the pretty light with no scent and without the fake look either since the candle is in something.

oh, jodie, i meant the yankee candle-type candles. i LOVE pure beeswax candles. my mom collected candelabras for a while. maybe i'll get one from her collection at Christmas.
i forgot -- desktop wallpaper! gotta have a pretty one. i love religious designs, but also love these.

oh that's nice.. I'm very particular with scented candles but I love the cinnamon spicy type in winter
my desktop wallpaper is usually a family picture and my screensaver is random pictures.. set to show in black and white.
But that reminds me.. time for a new avatar out with the harvest, in with the snow

I love having low-watt lamps/bulbs in various corners of the house. I hate overhead lights, unless for work/school, of course, or in the kitchen......and I just love having splotches of 15-40 watt lamps/bulbs on in corners all over.
And, once October comes....strings of white lights go up in a few places and are on all. the. time. It's dreary here, rarely sunny, and the strings of lights add a bit of cheer and "prettiness" wherever they are. I'm always on the lookout for white strings of white lights.
Especially with an older house....we don't have sconces, or track lighting or ANYTHING. So, these are inexpensive ways in the fall/winter/spring of prettying things with a little LIGHT!

I LOVE pretty!
I always have a pretty teacup and a few special pretty dishes --my regular dishes are white but coordinate well with various pretty tablecloths and cloth napkins.
My latest pretty is a pink and white linen scarf that I wear every time I go out (and sometimes at home--it's getting cold!). I always get compliments on it.

I love the way hair sticks look, but I have never been able to figure out how to use them. (I was not very girly in my youth.) Do they work with very thick hair?
One small pretty thing I like is to find a pretty magnetic pad for refrigerator lists. (Target sometimes has these in their $1 bins.) I usually have to endure some ribbing from the boys ("Eeew! Purple!"), but I find I need to assert my girliness occasionally.

Oh, ditto-ing this... that's why I loved putting up Christmas lights when we lived in NY.
Flourescent/overhead fixtures hurt my eyes and make me cranky (a sensory thing), so I always do floor/table lamps. We had to replace some when we moved, and I found some at Lowe's that reminded me of old fashioned streetlights, which reminded me of Narnia. The only problem is their switches are faulty and needed repair right away.

Angela they are one of the few things that work in my hair (fine and straight and long and thick).. what I do is grab all my hair, slide my hand about halfway down and twist.. then when it starts to get tight I coil it up onto the back of my head.. the twist tucks the ends and then I catch a bit of hair not in the twist/coil with the hair stick.. weave the stick into the coil goign through the loop where my hand was out the top of the coil and then through a bit of hair not in the coil on the other side.
If your hair isn't so long (mine varies between my waist and hips depending on how long ago I got it trimmed).. you don't need to double over the length when you twist.
It sounds complicated but isn't. I can put up my hair in literally seconds with no mirror (who can really see the back of their head anyway )

OOh! I was just inspired!
My kitchen is SO dark (it's on the inside of the apartment - away from all windows) and I have an artificial set of white lilies that have moved around various rooms to spruce things up...
I think I'll put the white flowers in the kitchen and spray them with a soft scent (I have several essential oils I can seriously dilute, spritz on and enjoy
(perhaps that would help cover up the nasty smell from under our sink - we have to have a degreaser per our local area's sewer system requirements for apartments - but it stinks and makes working in the kitchen UNpleasant. I already use almond-scented dish soap, but my cleansers I try to keep unscented. We have PartyLite candles all around, but as we use them up, they are less and less... Some nicely scented flowers just might do the trick.)

How do you make a beeswax polish? I've been looking for an alternative to Murphy's. Also, what form does the beeswax have to be in? |

Not Jen but I made some following directions linked by Jen in a recent thread. It's wonderful! A great natural alternative. We use it as a balm too! I used beeswax bought locally. Grated down from a large block. You can buy it online too. I've even seen it on amazon. You'll need some kind of oil as a base. I used coconut but you can use mineral, olive oil, any kind really.

This is such great timing for me since we moved to the new house. Tight now I am working on getting things up on the walls.
I love table cloths!!!! They are so easy to change out and when dirty, throw in the wash and clean again!!!
I love flowers but they get REALLY expensive. Seriously considering some fake ones but don't know if they'll have the same effect.
What about if I want to place something on a mantle but don't have one????? No fireplace, no mantle. Do you think it would be tacky to use one of those floating shelves???

Don't discount the foliage and shrubs around your new home, Mimi! Sometimes placing a few snippings of something in a vase can be very lovely! It doesn't have to be flowers! And, you can spend the next few months thinking of a few pretty flowers you'd like to plant in the spring so you can have fresh flower cuttings!
Now...something you could do that I think is very pretty is to purchase some dried flowers from a craft store - not fake ones. Dried flowers and herbs have such a pretty and very natural look. A pretty group of dried flowers could carry you through the fall/winter and into spring when you can plant some flowers of your own.

I think that could look very nice, Mimi! You could even do a grouping of shelves and it could be quite lovely! Think how pretty a collection of candles would look like that!

You know I think you are right! The beautiful bougainvillea that are in my back yard would be VERY pretty in a small cup-like vase. I am going to try it when we get home from MN!
I showed my hubby the shelves and he really likes the idea! If I got a few of different sizes I could even place the seasonal saint images we have without worrying about my little one taking them down. Now I know what I'm asking for Christmas!
