A couple others we just read today -
The Littlest Fir Tree by Margaret Wise Brown has been republished this year (different illustrator from 1950's edition). I remember this story from childhood.
Another "oldie" that isn't specifically a Christmas story but has a Christmas incident at the end is Virginia Lee Burton's Calico, the Wonder Horse.
Josie's Gift is a new book. Set in the depression era, a touching story of the true meaning of Christmas.

Cay, thank you! I found a book through that site that I've been trying to remember for years now - One Wintery Night. One of the best retellings of the Bible ever. It is a Christmas book, yes, but one that acknowledges that we need to know the whole story, the whole Bible, not just the traditional nativity portion as they really are inseparable.
And the illustrations? Incredible.
Please, please, please let my library have it!

Oooh...I see he has a story of the patron saint of travelers, especially Christmastime travelers - Saint Christopher!

The CD of the Harlem Boys' Choir that comes with it is soooo good. It's one of our favorite Christmas albums.

Just popping back in from the library website (gotta get all these Christmas books!) to let you know what I found: Lady in the Blue Cloak: Legends From the Texas Missions
collection of stories depicting the history of six Texas missions from the 17th century to the 19th century. Includes The Christmas vine (Misión de San Antonio de Valero) -- The padre's gift (Misión de San Antonio de Valero)
I'll be picking it up in a few days...anybody alread seen it...MaryM or??

How did you know, Gwen??? Yes, I have it right now. It is a very good book - very interesting stories showing the faith of the people in the region. "I've been meaning to post about it for weeks now." - I find myself saying that all the time - I have so many thoughts and ideas that never make it to the light of forum. Am I the only one with that problem?
I particularly thought it would be great for studying Texas history. I first heard about it from Amy Welborn's blog.

A Christmas Like Helen's is a wonderful children's picture book, a true living book, about a little girl named Helen who grew up on a Vermont farm and what her Christmases were like. The book is written by one of her 32 grandchildren and is filled with memories of Helen's life (lots of history!) It's a very engaging story and the illustrations are done by the same Caldecott-winning artist who did Snowflake Bentley and A Gardener's Alphabet.
My boys won't stop picking it up (even the baby seems to prefer looking at the pictures in this book over all the other books in our Christmas basket). And dh, who usually could care less which book I place in his hands to read to the children before bed, said he really liked this one too.

I found Father and Son, A Nativity Story in the library's catalog and am next to get it when it's returned.
Did anybody know about this (and you didn't tell me)  ? Have you read it? I have always wanted a picture book featuring St. Joseph.

We went to the Huntsville Public library in Alabama on Friday. We were in awe as the size of the children's section was about the size of our whole library! Anyway we brought home a Christmas on the Farm by Bob Artley. It is full of illustrations and many descriptions of growing up on a farm in the 1920s and 1930s. We are all enjoying it.
