Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was reading at the Five in a Row forum the "words" members are being called to focus on in 2009.

It can be a word that will inspire or lift you up in the new year, or a word you feel led to do a word study on or try to improve those areas of your life where you need it most.

Months earlier I would have thought the word I needed to focus on was "simplicity". I have considered how to "simplify" my life.

But the word that keeps coming to my mind and heart is:

HOPE

I'm unsure what the Lord wants to teach me in this word but I plan to look for clues and trust in His plan to teach it to me. So that is my chosen word for 2009.

What's yours?

Rejuvenation.

whenever we are trying to decide whether or not to add something or some event to our lives, we ask ourselves whether or not the item/event will rejuvenate us.

JOY

I am focusing on being a "joyful mother of children" and a joyful wife who is pleasant to come home to. I want our home to be a haven of joy- where we delight in the simple gifts of everyday living. This year, I seek to live out my vocation with JOY.

PATIENCE

Waiting, watching, listening, and letting God work in my life.

Slow to anger.
Slow to open my big mouth.
Allowing the moments to unfold without jumping ahead.
Allowing each kid enough time to be himself in the learning process.

Working on each child to have patience too.

We all tend to overreact and freak out too quickly around here.

All in God's time.

Renew - I really need to change the way I view everything. The way I think, the way I perceive things etc. and I need to renew my mind to the Word of God and what the Bible says about each situation.

Trying to decide on the right word.

Civility, graciousness, self control, kindness, courtesy...

Which word wraps it up?

Oooh, yes! Chivalry would work! For girls too, they just come by it more naturally.

Chivalry would encompass graciousness, courtesy, kindness, self sacrifice for others, pleasant manners...

Good. Chivalry.

... And in this house, the boys and girls include mom and dad. We all need to work on these things.

Last year my word was "GROW", but it should have been "MOVE" because we moved so many times.

I will think and pray on this and come back. Even though we were celebrating advent, Christmas has arrived in such a bustle, I don't feel ready for a new year yet.

I need the right word...what God is speaking to my heart is about the intimacy of our family life. But INTIMACY sounds a little risque don't you think?

I feel called to deepen our relationships and to guard how much of them are shared with the outside world...to talk less and love more...to tell less and do more...to vent less and be more...does that make sense?

I want to guard the hearts and minds of our family in our little enclosed circle this year, deepening our faith life and our connection to another. I want to be more quiet, gentle, and kind.

So what's my word? Help me here.

What about CHERISH? Your description reminds me of the scripture paraphrase, "...for where your heart is, there is your treasure..."

This is how I'm feeling too. Its me (as opposed to the family) that needs more patience, and more hope as well. This has been a difficult year for me as a mother. Hope is more encouraging than patience, but patience is more repentant...Sigh...I can't decide, but whatever I do, I've decided I'm going to get some wall letters like Elizabeth uses and I'm going to put them on my side of the bed on my wall for the year. I need a visual reminder. The other thing I like to do is to put a scripture or quote that reminds me of what my focus is on my bathroom mirror. I guess I need to pick one first, though...

LOL, I was going to say "MOVE" for this year.

Dh and I have been going back and forth for YEARS about moving vs. staying and revamping our current house. But all of a sudden I feel inspired to box things up and get the house ready to put on the market. It's kind of eerie (sp?) because it really feels other-wordly, not ME making the decision to move but something compelling me to just get ready. Dh is on board, but probably only because I'm so gung ho about it.

So I think I'll choose PREPARE as my word. I can use that in many ways - my heart, and my home.

Hmmm...on my fridge is a picture of Mr. VW (Maryan's fil). I look at him many times a day, and say to myself each time "call to holiness". He reminds me to fulfill my calling, my vocation.

So maybe that is my word... "vocation"

I want to work this year to fulfill my vocation as mother, wife, friend, and to fulfill it well, not just with mediocrity.

I think my word should be
VIRTUE.

Everyone in my house, especially me, needs to grow in virtue(s).

Now, I just need to study and ponder how to make this a reality. Suggestions welcome.
