IMHO, culture can't be separated from history and geography, and especially Louisiana politics needs cultural back-up. Once you separate the reasons WHY and HOW people lived during an era or location, the knowledge of WHAT is just head scratching, and one tends to apply current cultural thinking on past events.
Perhaps it's been overplayed a bit, but a child learns more when they can walk in the past.
Even geography is better understood when applying culture. Understanding how to build in different terrain, establishing cities near waterways, life near marsh lands.
An example I'm thinking of: the influence of mosquitoes due to the geography has a huge role in Louisiana history (yellow fever victims), cemeteries above ground because of the high water table, floods that bring coffins floating through the streets, misunderstanding what harm mosquitoes can do because of cultural influences (superstitions). How about the role the Catholic Church played? Divisions in society to try to keep the "nobility" away from the yellow fever of the "poor". I can think of all sorts of projects that tie in culture with this geography and history lesson.
But perhaps the parents don't mean all culture, just want to go beyond the Cajun, Creole, Mardi Gras, Catholic emphasis on foods and customs?

Guess what arrived on my doorstoop this morning? 
Ike can blow through here but I will be blissfully wrapped up in a quilt and Cooking for Christ.
Just me and my flashlight and a new/old book friend.

So, where did you order from??? I'm sooooo, soooo tempted. But, I must.stay.within.my.budget.....must.not.spend  Not quite yet anyway. Where did you order from??
I did  have just enough money in my litur. year envelope to order Feast Day Cookbook: The Traditional Catholic Feast Day Dishes of Many Lands by Katherine Burton and Cooking With the Saints by Ernst Schuegraf (which I'm not sure I'll like, but it's been on my wish list for so long that I decided to go ahead and get it.)
After I build up enough cash in my liturgical year envelope I really would like to find a copy of this book.
Do tell where you ordered from....and please bring your thoughts back here after you've drunk it in. (silly pun intended )

A little bird told me they had a $30.00 copy at Biblio.com.
I wasn't quite ready to spend that much. Then everyone started talking about how they couldn't find an affordable copy.
I went back to the site and saw that the $30.00 copy had already been bought. They had a $32.00 copy (with $1.00 off coupon) and, after that, only $50.00+.
Yes, I got it. Call me greedy.
It's a thin book. I was surprised.
I can tell already it's not just a cookbook. It's a book to read. And, I can also tell, Florence Berger is an excellent storyteller. Excellent!
The next liturgical book on my "want" list is A Continual Feast by Evelyn Vitz. I recently saw a copy and it is so good. Perhaps for Christmas.

I am surprised you don't have these yet, Cay! You will enjoy Vitz's book, too. Nothing in print compares to the family storytelling as Florence Berger. It's priceless. But Vitz's book is the best in-print all around liturgical cookbook. Mary Reed Newland and Helen McLoughlin are the other two authors that I think paint a good "homey" picture, but their books aren't just cookbooks.

Sometimes I restrain myself from ordering a book until I've seen it hands-on. I'm embarrassed to admit how rare this is.
I did it with Vitz's book then a hs friend showed it to me last month and I could have gobbled it up. I agree with you, Jenn. Just from the one-day look-see I had of it, I believe it's "the best in-print all around liturgical cookbook". Worth every penny. It's yummy!
I have some of Mary Reed Newland's books. None of Helen McLoughlin's. I've had Joanne Bogle's Book of Feasts and Seasons for years now.

I have it. It's excellent!
My dh reminded me of some blow money he had set aside for me. I've tried to acquire a copy of Cooking For Christ...but it remains to be seen if I've been successful. The exact copy of the book I ordered is for sale on biblio.com and abebooks. I was a little nervous when I placed the order...so much $$ for the book (though I felt it to be worth it and an investment in the traditions I foster in my home) but now I'm more nervous that the book is gone....sitting on pins and needles until I hear from the seller!

Oh we have A Continual Feast too.. My oldest was peeking over my shoulder and we saw that book on a website and so we looked it over and read the discription etc. I ended up getting it as a "family gift" either last year or hte year before at Christmas

I was also surprised as I was opening the package. I thought it would be a heavier book. But I can tell that there is plenty of substantial information inside. I guess I should learn the lesson that size is not everything.
