Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We'll be starting back to school soon, and I'm trying to gather up my resources. We'll be doing American history this year, and I think we're starting with Native Americans.

So far, the only book I have is The Birchbark House. I figure I can find some information books at the library.

What are your favorite living books about Native Americans?

Thanks!

Hi Emily...how are you feeling?

I'll get back to this post tomorrow or Saturday. I have a few good books to recommend but don't have the energy to get them off the shelf right now .

Love,

Here are a few:

The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush and The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie DePaola.

Paul Goble has a few books, The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses and his Iktomi series.

In My Mother's House is sweet.

The Desert is Theirs has really beautiful illustrations.

Let us know what books you find and enjoy, Emily.

Love,

We loved Farley Mowat's (we are Canadian!) In Search of the Viking Grave and Two for the North.

THE BOOK OF INDIANS by Holling Clancy Holling.

One of my favorite books EVER!!

It covers Indians of the Woodlands, Plains, NW Coast, and Desert---starts with an info chapter about their life, home, food, hunting, etc.--these have all sorts of detailed drawings--and then 2 really thrilling adventure stories featuring a boy and a girl. I can't tell you how much I love this book!! It's OOP, but can be found easily used for around $6, or ask at your library. We did a month-long study with this, and it is really the only Native American book you need if you use it.

Quite detailed though, might be a bit too much for your 6 year olds, depending on their listening level.

We also enjoyed the "Draw Write Now" book featuring Native Americans, for notebook pages.

Oops I also forgot about traditional indian legends, which are very fun. Libraries have tons of these. We like the books by Joseph Bruchac.

The American Indian is one we have. My son is an American Indian reenactor, what age range are you looking for?

Bl. Kateri stories.

The Childhood of Famous American series has several American Indians portrayed.

We also enjoyed
Sign of the Beaver

Thanks! I put the Holling C Holling book on ILL and hopefully I'll have it next week. I had forgotten all about that book. I own both of the Tomie De Paola books mentioned as well. We'll definitely read those.
