Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Now here's a thought: using Thomas Woods' The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History for high school work.

This book was mentioned by Macbeth in a recent blog post that she would use for her own high schoolers, but I just finished reading this book as a supplement for teaching my littles AmHist this year and as I was reading I was thinking ...

hmmm....you could assign a chapter at a time and have the high schooler refute or verify the facts as presented by Woods. This would be a great way to get the high schooler engaged in what REALLY happened, in looking at both sides and then deciding for themselves who was right, wrong or misquoted.

OK, you can now check off American History for your high schooler!

We really enjoyed Freedom Just Around the Corner (the Civil War era companion volume just came out this spring. The author maintains that Americans are "hustlers" - from the beginning - and I think I'd translate that as "ambitious people" instead. It's a great read. I'm ordering the companion volume as we speak, er, type.

Great idea, Mary...I might borrow your idea for debate, if I end up teaching it at our co-op.

I've bought a few books from this series. I don't remember whether I bought the American History one or not, but if not, I'm there!
