I read through some of the archives and saw that many of you enjoyed SOTW I but had reservations about II, and even more with III. I am looking at using SOTW I with my children this year (5th, 3rd, 1st). What do you normally use after I, to avoid II and III?

I use SOTW II in combination with Old World and America and Story of the Church to replace the chapters I don't like or want to round out in SOTW II. I don't use the catholic texts in their entirety, and SOTW is our spine. I haven't used SOTW III or IV yet in their entirety. They are on my reading list for this summer! lol
Fwiw, its hard to find a good world history text for a wide range of ages. For that matter, its hard to find a good US history text, too. I have come around to doing editing and adding in rather than tossing books, unless its just trash from beginning to end. hth

We're nearing the final chapters of III right now and we are referring to a lot of the additional resources/suggested reading lists in the Activity Book to round things out a bit. I've actually found III to be fairly inclusive of Catholic history or at least mentions the significance of religion more than the previous versions.

I loved the 1st SOTW, as did my boys. We switched to RC History as we moved past the Ancients. Who has time to weed out anti-Catholic books? HTH,

I keep going around and around with what to do next with our history studies. I've searched the posts here to see what the general consensus is regarding several curriculums, but I'm still not squared.
We are just finishing SOTW I and love the program design. I would like to continue with SOTW II but have read here that there are many inaccuracies - particularly pertaining to protestant/Catholic perspectives. I must admit that aside from Colonial American History, my education in history was next to nothing. Therefore, I wouldn't know if I read something in a text that is inaccurate.
I downloaded RCHistory Volume 2 (the first unit) and find that at first glance it looks like it will require more legwork for me.
I would love advice from anyone who has insight as to how I should move forward.
One thought that I've had is to just use a Catholic history spine instead of the SOTW book and use the SOTW II activity book to guide us through activities, mapwork, and additional reading. I will also use the Reading Your Way Through History booklist to be sure that we have ample Catholic reading to bolster our program.
Thoughts anyone?

When I have run across Protestant-biased material in SOTW, we use that as an opportunity for discussion of both Church history and theology.
I do like that it offers a more world view of religion and we use this to develop a greater understanding of others, an opportunity to teach respect and tolerance. It is easier to evangelize when you understand where others are coming from.
Perhaps someone will publish the Catholic Companion to SOTW - similar to the Catholic version of Ambleside Online!

Like Books mentioned above, using a Catholic spine or two is helpful to balance the often negative bias when studying the period in SOTW II (Medieval, Renaissance, and Reformation). I highly recommend The Story of the Church for YOU to read. In fact, I have a couple of documents I've worked on that align readings from Catholic texts and SOTW II/III. I'll try to polish them up a bit and post something on my blog for downloading. I'll update here when it's ready.

I have recently been introduced to the original Story of the World series written about 100 years ago. The language in it is far more beautiful than the language in Susan Wise Bauer's books. As soon as I heard the first few paragraphs, I was hooked and promptly decided to throw out the other SOTW books!

Living books uses the original Story of the World series as a spine in the curriculum.

Betsie, do you know if there are anti Catholic issues with these books? I took a look at the first page of the book you linked, and it does look well written.

I have only read the first one so far, so I don't know. We deal with those issues as they come up or skip them if necessary. What would you consider anti-Catholic? I can be on the lookout!

I have also read out loud from the 'original Story of books..." however, I have found them a little too condensed on the topic at hand (probably a problem with most of the sweeping history type books). But they are well written, engaging, and free!

Thank you for your guide!
What I am thinking about doing is using your guide to steer through the problematic chapters, and making a similar outline using History of the Church
since we already own it.
Has anyone else used this book with your children? We had an adult study at our parish using this book (actually this is the 2nd book from the Didache series that we've used, and I love them). Like The Story of the Church, it is written for high school level, but has fabulous pictures, illustrations and timelines.

Just popping in here to say that I have revised my original document Catholic Resources for SOTW II on my blog. It is cleaned up a little and now in pdf format. I also uploaded a similar document (without aligned Usborne readings) for SOTW 3.
