Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My kids really enjoyed the Winter Olympics unit study we did 2 years ago. We did Amanda Bennett with some of our own rabbit trails.

They are already getting excited about the summer olympics this year. I am trying to brainstorm some ideas for this summer. Any ideas?

That's funny because my son was asking about doing something with the summer olympics too. No ideas yet though.

I have posted my initial rabbit trail at Beijing 2008- Summer Olympics unit study (Thanks to my dd who did the links for me - I seem to be challenged with links )

I am still adding to it - lots of picture and chapter books to add. I am also working on the China study - I want to add lots of living books on China.

If you have any ideas please post so that I can link or post.

I'm glad someone else is thinking of this too. To make our study more interesting, dh is travelling to China for business this spring.

Thanks for the links, Marilyn! I hope to have some time to work on our unit study later this week.

Thanks! My dd(11) did the music thing for me - I am still new to the whole blog thing.

This is pretty late, but I'm putting my olympics and China study together now.

Homeschool share has a fabulous unit an lapbook with great ideas!

HSS Olympics lapbook and unit study

A few other things I have on my list so far:

*go to youtube.com and type in "traditional chinese music" to listen to chinese music

*look at the websites listed on HSS unit to write your child's name in chinese

*practice writing numbers 1-10 in chinese

*go eat at a chinese restaurant for a field trip

*study the animals of china - especially panda

*paint chinese flag

*make chinese paper lanterns (google for craft idea)

There are so many great ideas on the HSS unit, I do hope you will check it out. One of them is to follow the torch on the map as it travels around the world!

Another idea I love is to choose one country to "follow" in the games and graph their winnings - how many golds, silvers, bronzes, etc.

HTH!

Thanks Candace for bumping this up. It has been on my list to update my unit study and add ideas - just have not got round to it.

One thing my husband always does with the kids each summer is to hold our "family Olympic games" - he does several events - some at the pool, some in our backyard and some on the roads around our neighborhood. The kids LOVE it. Each evening of 'the games' we have a medal ceremony after dinner - each child has their "anthem" (favorite song) which is played when they win.

Marilyn and anyone else,

I got all my plans together (mostly ideas I have found all over the web!) and put a big list on my blog if anyone is interested. :)

Is anyone else concerned about the venue for this year's summer olympics?

It reminds me of the 1936 Nazi games.

There was an article in last week's National Catholic Register, where a missionary priest detailed some of the atrocities committed by the Chinese government to "make way" for the games (razing neighborhoods, building fences to keep out the regular citizens).

My husband and I agreed, we will not be watching.

China should NEVER have been chosen as the venue. And I think heads of state should not attend. But my personal view (and I am not trying to start any political disagreement here) is that it is not fair on the athletes who work so hard for these games - so we WILL support the athletes ane the spirit of the Olympic games. We have talked to the children about the problems in China - but we will study the area and read about it. And we will fly our flags (British and American) and watch the events.

Without sparking a debate, could anyone point me to an article or something I could read to learn more about this? I guess I live under a rock...I never even thought of the country doing anything bad to the natives to prepare for the olympics. That makes me sad.

Candace - I cannot find the Catholic news articles on the human rights abuses in China - but here is the Amnesty International position for starters.

The IOC actually stated that they hoped holding the games in China would improve the country's human rights - but I am not sure this will happen.

Unfortunately, the National Catholic Register only makes it's articles available online to subscribers. We have already recycled the issue that had the article in it. Sorry I can't be of more help!

I have been offline for a week and am now catching up! We spent a lot of time studying China a couple years back, and became very interested in their treatment of Tibet, in particular. Here is an article from Amnesty International. It is a couple of months old, but it highlights the treatment of the Chinese citizens who have attempted peaceful protests.

Regarding the Catholic faith in China, here is an article by the US Catholic Bishops. On Catholic Answers this evening, a priest from West Palm Beach, FL, called in to state that when he traveled to China with his mom, he was asked to sign a form with his assurance that he would not be trying to evangelize the Chinese people while he was there, or say Mass. He said he said his Masses privately, with just the others who were visiting, in his hotel room.

God Bless,

Marilyn,
I have enjoyed checking out the updates and links. I really liked the logo of "August is for Athletes."

Does anyone have any specific plans for "athletic" activities that they could share? I was thinking of pursuing a different activity every couple of days- just not sure what ones.

Stacy - my husband plans all the athletic activities - he does them most evenings - I will ask him if he can pencil some down for me and I will post them. I know that all the kids have already chosen their "national anthems" (songs that they like!) and I am supposed to be making medals for the medal ceremonies and I am supposed to make sure that our stop watch works. I know that in prior years dh has held races at the pool, crosscountry round the neighborhood, soccer games, throwing (some kind so adapted javelin), bow and arrow, baseball, long jump and high jump (adapted.

Great plans, ladies! I was going to put in my plugs for our two favorites:

Five Chinese Brothers
Tikki Tikki Tembo

But I see Marilyn's updated list includes these.

Kathryn had information on Our Lady of China (I just love the Chinese madonnas!)

I don't think China should be the venue. And while I agree that it's "unfair" to the athletes, Dh and I keep thinking that we would personally boycott the venue if we were the athletes. Besides the anti-life and socialist concerns, you've got horrible pollution which could ruin one's lungs for life. Now the story breaking through is that all Internet activity outside the village is going to be monitored. If I'm an athlete standing for freedom, coming from the US, wouldn't it be more logical to boycott for these reasons?

The Olympics have lost so much luster for our family, now that it's mostly professional and so much drug scandals. How does one sort out what is true God-given talent and determination and examples to hold up our children. And I just loved the cold war battles from the Olympics as a child -- Freedom triumphing over the Iron Curtain. That US hockey team winning just can't be reproduced!
