Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Story of Holly and Ivy

I think this book has been mentioned before but I just wanted to share quick -

I was about to read this last night, I checked it out thinking of my 11 year old dd - she still loves to play with dolls and so does her best friend.

I showed it to 5 year-old ds and he sneered - yuck - a book about dolls.

Well - I tried three times to stop reading and save the rest for the next night. No! No! No! Read more! begged all three children dd 11, ds 8, AND especially ds 5. We read the whole thing - lots of smiles and little giggles all around.

I so needed that sweet moment - whatever the day brings our before bed read aloud seems to smooth any rumbled feathers leftover from the day.

Then dd 13, who doesn't play with her dolls anymore, equally sneers at "picture" books walks out of her room after we are done and says "What were you reading?" I tell her and she grumbles "Why didn't you call me?"

about the 13-year old.

This is one of my top 5 Christmas books! Isn't it wonderful? I get the same thing....."NO, read more..don't stop!"

Love it!

I have this on video! About 16 or more years ago, my mum taped a whole bunch of Christmas specials. This was one of them. The tape is beginning to wear, so I am thinking about having it transferred to dvd. We have so much fun watching it, commercials and all.
Holly and Ivy is really a sweet story. All my boys have like it!

God Bless,

Whaaaaaaat???!!!!!! There is a video of this???? How can we obtain this??? Anyone? Anyone?

It is set in the town where KathrynUK was born. She said it doesn't look like this anymore...most of it replaced with concrete in the 60's.

My brother's name is Ivan....so I had him give this book to the girls last year for Christmas.....Ivan/Ivy....I'm such a dork

I don't know if there is an actual video. I looked it up, and it was made into a Christmas special, shown only in 1991.    But, I manage to have it on video tape thanks to my dear mum who taped a LOT of Christmas specials for my boys.
Here is the info I found about the tv special. It was made by the Children's Television Workshop, but I can't find anything at their website regarding having this on video. Maybe we need to send notes to encourage them to release it?    They could tie it in with the book for next Christmas. Appeal to their marketing manager!
I will continue to look for it, in case it is out there, somewhere.

God Bless,

Bumping this, well....just BECAUSE! SUCH a great book! LOVE LOVE LOVE this story!!!!!!!

This book has a very wide audience:

::MOMS!!!!! I read this every year by myself, late at night with a little hot apple cider by my side.

::Any Independent Readers....it's a longer picture book. It's also a great book for those young, strong readers....content isn't "too mature", text is challenging.

::As a Read Aloud over a couple nights for the younger crowd. I read it for the first time, about 3 years ago when dd#1 was 5, and she and the 4 yo loved it...read it while they were tucked in bed, and then we looked at the pictures the next day.

::Of course, a read aloud for EVERYONE. As Donna mentioned above, even the boys love this story! (not that I would know anything about that, though)
