My almost nine-year-old is a voracious reader. We are going to do the dePaola unit this year for Advent, but I need some more books keep her busy. She reads at about the 6th grade level, but her maturity is very third grade! If I do not find a decent list for her, she will bring twaddle home from the library below her reading level, and I can't stand the thought of an Advent filled with more Babysitters' Club and Captain Underpants.
I considered banning twaddle, but she reads most everything I hand her, so I haven't seen the need.

The Trees Kneel at Christmas
...but it's great as a read-aloud you might not want to give it just to her.

I've already mentioned this one, but The Christmas Mystery is a great one -- you could slow her down by having her read only one chapter each day ...
A great author is Alta Halverson Seymour -- sadly most of her books are oop  but you can probably get them at the library. She did a series of Christmas books from different countries -- a few years ago as a read-aloud, we read Arne and the Christmas Star -- set in Norway. This year, I've got Erik's Christmas Camera about Sweden and The Top o' Christmas Morning about Ireland. I'm going to try and find a few each year as they're such wonderful stories and great read-alouds! You could have your daughter read them and then do a bit about the different cultures' Christmas traditions (she has lots of info about that in each book)!

Thank you! I will check the library.
As for slowing her down, no chance. She even often sneaks the read--aloud into her room and finishes it on her own. She is then listens to me read it again, but is really good about not spoiling the story.

::The Best Christmas Pageant Ever
::House without a christmas tree- I loved this movie as a kid, altho it's pretty hard to stomach as an adult (corny acting, etc)....and I never knew it was a book! Haven't read it, but LOVED the story as a girl.
::The Story of Holly and Ivy, Rumor Godden GREAT! GREAT!
::Legend of the Christmas Rose, Lagerlof
::Little House Christmas Treasury, Laura Ingalls Wilder
Christmas Stories, Laura Ingalls Wilder
::The Real St. Nicholas, has lots of short stories about St. Nicholas. (maybe the reading level is a bit high???)

I'm not sure what grade level this book is at, but it's called "Christmas at the Little Blue House", by Colleen Drippe. They also have many other Christmas/Advent items.

::Five LIttle Peppers and How they Grew isn't "Advent/Christmas" nec....but there are several chapters in the middle that ARE and it has a Christmas "feel" to it overall.
And, what about a good book about the history of various Christmas Hymns....many of which have great stories to them, that could lead to some great rabbit trails. Stories Behind the Best-Loved Christmas Carols, by Ace Collins is a good one....and he has another Christmas one too. They are fun to read!

I was just thinking of digging up this list again. I now have two voracious readers of my own and 125 RE students and 80 Catholic students in my charge.
I often peruse the forum for Living Religious Ed ideas. Thanks for your wonderful witness to the faith. The teachers at our school love the suggestions I have handed them and so do my Catechists and students. Your passion for learning the faith through literature plants seeds all over this little town in Northeastern WI.

We are in the middle of The Christmas Doll and it is really good!!!!  It's a great read-aloud, but would also captivate any "reluctant-readers" as an independent-read, it's soooooo good! It's pretty heart-wrenching and sad ....so "super-sensitives" maybe--beware.
Lucy and Glory are orphaned sisters with no real place to call home. Only their memories of a beautiful doll named Morning Glory brighten their bleak lives. One day, the girls find an old, battered doll that Glory senses is their beloved Morning Glory. But Morning Glory is no ordinary doll. And how she leads the girls to the most surprising turn of fortune makes for a heartwarming story that brims with love, hope, and the spirit of Christmas.

OH MY STARS!!!!!! What a WONDERFUL BOOK! I can't recommend this enough! SHOUTING FROM THE ROOFTOPS!........Must Read!!!!! MUST READ!!!!
Before my 5yo left this morning, she made us "TOTALLY PROMISE" that we wouldn't read this until she came home today!
I looked the other day, and I first heard about this book from Cay's Christmas Mosaic. Thank you, Cay!
How can you make it through pages 139-140 without getting COMPLETELY CHOKED UP??? We were crying almost as much as at the ending of Stone Fox!!! (We should have a thread with top-reads-that-make-you-cry.)

Our boys' book club just read This Way to Christmasby Ruth Sawyer. It was not specifically Advent, but a wonderful Christmas story.

We just finished this book and, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!
What an absolute treasure that I actually found in our library!!!!
My children were in awe at the end and just kept saying they wanted to see the tress kneel.
Highly Recommended!

Thank you for your lists until today, I hadn't been ableto locate any books that I can ship to OZ without encurring a huge postage bill.
But I have been very successful locating some books today.
I am also looking at purchasing a more of a chapter book on St Nicholas. Any ideas.
I have a 12-13 yo dd who is an avid reader. I proof read books and she snuggles up and reads them either next to me, or with the cat on her lap.
