We are finishing our time in the rainforest and are almost ready to depart for Australia.
I am looking for a read aloud set in Australia to be read to two very attentive 6 and almost 8 year olds.
Hopefully someone can give me some suggestions.

The Muddle-headed Wombat (Ruth Park), perhaps?
I love the Billabong books as well (Mary Grant Bruce).
There's also the Silver Brumby (Elyne Mitchell). Actually, that's probably the ones I'd recommend:-)

Joanne, what sort of book are you after exactly? would you prefer more information type ones on animals? Leslie Rees' are brilliant, amazing living book style but unfortunately out of print but your library may have them. Are you after Australian bush stories like the Billabong books Fe recommended? Or would you like Australian history books? Doris Chadwick's books if your library has them are priceless, alas out of print too. But I'll have a look later on my shelves for titles in print if you know what sort of genre you are after.

 I just found Snugglepot at our interloan library. That was the only book on any of the lists that the library system had, but I think that this book will be something that the kids will enjoy.

For 6 and 8yr olds you could try these authors, Trica Oktober, Colin Thiele and Steve Parish all of them have a range of picture books that would be suitable for this age group, some of our favorites are bush Song by Trica Oktober, River Murray Mary and Magpie Island by Colin Thiele and all of Steve Parishes wildlife books.

How about the PUmpkin runner. It is a Five in a Row volume 4 book.

This puts me in mind of Farmer Pelz's Pumpkins by Colin Thiele. It is a long picture book more suited to the 5+ group. I know pumpkins are all the rage at present in the US Set in South Australia (all Colin Thiele's books are)it is the story of a farmer who is determined to grow the biggest pumpkin in the town.

We got our Australia lapbook started today, and the first book we read was Pumpkin Runner. We loved it. Of course this is the right season for this book, and it also served as a geography lesson for the cities of Sydney and Melbourne. That's what I really like about books like this, they are able to serve more than one purpose.
